Summary

The decision to publish the book has been very difficult, and taken with heavy hearts... My reason for writing it is simple: to give an account of the truth...

Writing this memoir has entailed recording some very personal, intimate and emotional aspects of our lives. Sharing these with strangers does not come easily to me, but if I hadn't done so I would not have felt the book gave as full a picture as it is possible for me to give.

As with every action we have taken over the last four years, it ultimately boils down to whether what we are doing could help us to find Madeleine. When the answer to that question is yes, or even possibly, our family can cope with anything... nothing is more important to us than finding our little girl.

Gerry McCann says: "It is a sad fact that not a single police force anywhere is proactively looking forMadeleine (as is the case for many other missing children). I am sure this book will re-energize the search for our daughter and the public will get behind the Find Madeleine campaign once again. It is simply unacceptable that the authorities could give up on Madeleine - especially without a single review of the case having been carried out. Our daughter, and whoever took her, are out there. We need your help to find them."

This is not about Madeleine

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the book had been about the little girl rather than her mother.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kate McCann again?

No

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I'm sorry, no it didn't. I was extremely disappointed and rather shocked by the way it was more like Kate McCann's uninteresting autobiography.

10% Madeline, 90% excuses

I was going in this book with my mind already made up, but this book did little to convince me otherwise.
it's just an account of what happened, excuses and thank yous and nothing to even slightly admit they might have done things a bit wrong (leaving kids alone with plenty of other options within budget).
Aside from the famous passage mentioning your child's privates, this book slightly sympathies with the lucid abductor (no evidence?) and says more stern words about the police of another country.
It's just odd. Plain odd.
Aside from that, it's not too good of a book and we learn nothing about Madeline (it's like she did not exist before this tragedy), nothing. Just what she wore on the holiday, and a few (FEW) other bits. It should not be called 'Madeline'. It's a very self indulgent thing to publish such a book. Everyone else is to blame.

Guilty as hell

The more i read, the guilt is obvious, there is about 1 chapter about madeline and the rest is about them and who they made friends with along the way.

A bit odd

It’s a strange book one time you feel sorry for them the next minute you remember how she went missing. Somethings don’t add up. Worth a read tho

Insitefull reading , great read

Fantastically written, heartbreaking book. Shame on all those people who presumed the worst of the family before waiting to hear their version of events. My only wish was that Kate McCann could have read it herself.

Heartbreaking

Kate's agony runs through this book, and I found myself in tears several times while listening. The focus, of course, had to be on the search for Madeleine. All the McCann's want is to find their missing daughter. The Portuguese "investigation" was appallingly sub-standard and the family have faced constant criticism, suspicion and intrusions while still desperately trying to find Madeleine. I sincerely hope that they will be reunited with their beautiful Madeleine soon.

Truly heartbreaking story.

Beneath the rumours conspiracies and lies I truly hope this family can stay strong in the hope that one day Madeline is reunited safely home.

God bless you all. ❤️

No remorse for own actions

I read this as I found it incomprehensible that parents would leave their children alone as in this case and wanted to understand the thinking
This book reinforces all the worst characteristics of Madeline’s parents and is more about wanting to blame others and protect themselves. There is a complete lack of remorse or recognition within this book that what happened to poor Madeline is of their own making leaving children alone in a ground floor apartment next to a road with a door open beggars belief
God bless the poor girl

Truly harrowing.

I never write reviews but felt compelled.. I felt so angry shocked and dismayed listening to this book and all the injustice done to the Mc Cann family ..not only had their cherished daughter be taken but the outright mental torture and incompetence by the police is truly unforgivable.. not to mention the media and all the idiots that have tried to destroy them.. any fool following the case at the time could see it just wasn’t possible they had a part in Madeleines disappearance.. my God if the police had done their job instead of looking for an easy way out Maybe Madeleine might have been found.. The police ,media and all the trolls are in my opinion as evil as the inhuman creep that took poor Madeleine ... I couldn’t stop listening to this book all be it with my mouth on the floor throughout.. I hope and pray that one day the injustice to Gerry and Kate is brought out into the light and above all they find their precious Madeleine..

Touching listen

Difficult to comprehend the emotions these dear people have had to endure but the book does reflect this pretty well. Very interesting look on the case, which balances off some of the negative articles that have been printed about the McCann’s. It details a number of question that the public domain has brought to light although outlining with confidence the innocence of the McCann’s. It’s a must read for anyone who has been following the case since that fateful day.

Unwavering Courage

I cannot even begin to fathom the courage and determination it must have taken Kate McCann to relive every excruciating detail of her beautiful daughter’s abduction while on holiday in Portugal. This book is testament of a mother’s love and the lengths she went to and still is, in finding her daughter and bring the monster to justice. As hard as it was to listen to Kate recount and relive every moment of horror and heartbreak in hopes of finding her little sweet girl. Sadly, it’s now 2019, no sign or even a whisper of promise 12 years after the nightmare began. Madeleine would be a teenager by now, virtually unrecognizable to her parents. God willing she will someday find her way back to her mother’s arms, safe at last, once again. Godspeed Madeline. Godspeed Kate❤️

Tragic story of a family

Would you listen to Madeleine again? Why?

Yes. Kate McCann's tale is compelling as it is tragic, and the narration is wonderful. Like another reviewer stated, it might have been better if Kate had read the book herself (she did read the foreward), but perhaps this was not possible for a number of reasons.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Madeleine?

There are many touching moments with the children, and of course the disappearance of Madeleine was very tragic and distressing to read about.

Any additional comments?

This book is a tragic, well-told chronicle of the events leading up to and after the disappearance of this little girl. In parts it was hard to follow everything that was going on, but this actually fitted well and helped me to empathize with the hell that this family has gone through and will continue to go through until such point as Madeleine is found.

This book bothers me, a lot.

Why would the mother think that taking this moment to tell her life story was appropriate?
Kate McCann is a disgusting human. I have a huge feeling she sold her child to sex traffickers.
I want to personally apologize to the narrator for having to be put through this horror, I hope they paid you well.

heart wrenching

I was not ever very fascinated with the McCann story being all the way in the USA other then I have always felt awful for them.
so much time has passed that I myself have grown into a full fledged adult with children of my own one being a 3 year old almost 4 year old girl.
As a mom I struggled too wrap my mind around the horror this mom and dad wake up too every day. I can only say Kate and Gerry must be incredibly strong people.
I feel awful for them and pray that Madeleine is found alive and well soon.
It was informative and fact based. I would highly recommend reading it could probably even change the minds of people who wrongly accuse these parents I believe.

Unforgivable parental negligence

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Absolutely not. The main protagonist, the mother of the kidnapped gift, whines and complains that the local police didn't do enough to find her daughter. The mother made the decision that leaving her children alone in a resort villa was okay b/c, after all, she wanted to dine and drink with other vacationers. I was so disgusted by the mother's behavior I couldn't finish the book.

If you’ve listened to books by Kate McCann before, how does this one compare?

Haven't previously been subjected to this whining, "feel sorry for me" narrator.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kate McCann (introduction) and Lesley Sharp ?

IDK.

What else would you have wanted to know about Kate McCann’s life?

WHY the selfish, useless "mother" abandoned her children for a good meal in a restaurant.

Any additional comments?

What parent would leave sleeping children to dine out? Seriously, why weren't this young girl's parents jailed?

An insight into what happened

What made the experience of listening to Madeleine the most enjoyable?

Kate McCann telling the true story

What was one of the most memorable moments of Madeleine?

Her outgoing personality and the caring of her siblings.

Did Kate McCann (introduction) and Lesley Sharp do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, they did and it was possible to remember who was in their group of friends and to separate from the family members. How this was dealt with and repeated, you felt that you actually knew the people that were caring for Kate and Gerry McCann.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel very sad at times especially how the police did not seem to care or take action quickly enough following Madeleine's abduction.

Any additional comments?

This book is well worth reading as you actually find out the truth of actually what happened to very loving and caring parents, which didn't always come out in the media reporting.

This is worded so beautifully, I do not believe they were involved with her disappearance. I also pray for her family. I pray they find peace and I hope they find answers as to what happened.

Really well done and nothing but love to this family

I’m so glad Kate decided to write this book. I remember when their search for Madeleine hit the news, and I also remember how difficult it was to know whether or not what was being reported in the news was accurate. It was heart wrenching watching their pain play out in the media, and this book is so well done. All the mis-information and details are addressed, and the real people in this story come to life finally. It is sickening how many people involved, who could have and still could help make a difference, let ulterior, self-promoting motives dictate their behavior. I will recommend this book over and over in hopes that it will help this precious person to be found and returned to her family.
