Summary

At a shadowy company (Karoli Robotics Corporation) owned by a Sillicon Valley billionaire, a scientist named Jim creates an AI that can fool the Turing test at the same time as his colleague, Daniel, successfully synthesizes DNA in a test tube. Daniel's attempts to reanimate dead chimps using his discovery have been unsuccessful, but when his friend Laura Bocelli is killed by being trapped inside a lab freezer, Daniel is presented with the perfect specimen. However, Laura is irreparably brain dead.

Daniel and Jim join forces to reanimate Laura using the DNA technology as well as the AI, creating a brilliant but psychopathic new Laura.

A year later a young journalist starts digging into the new CEO of Karoli Robotics Corporation, Laura Bocelli, and finds more than she bargained for. Laura will do anything to protect her secret and her plan to engineer a race of AI Cyborgs made in her image.

Slightly Flawed Design

I always look forwards to the Audible dramas, they have produced some real crackers in the past. I didn't think this was quite up there with them though and the key weakness is with the story. The sound design is good, I enjoyed the original music though anyone listening in noisy conditions may find it occasionally intrusive and at times it seemed a little overdone and where it should have scored with big hitting sounds it seemed quiet, such as gunshots.. I also liked the performances, a couple of great voices in there but, apart from the fact that about two minutes of opening and closing credits were repeated every half hour it was the story that never quite hit the mark. I liked the start and everything seemed very contemporary but the threat, the solution and to be honest the character behaviour seemed very old fashioned sci-fi rather than anything cutting edge. It's an enjoyable enough way to spend a few hours but not up there with the very best.

great story, great performance, annoying format

great story (although the core story has been done many times). the performance is good but the pseudo-episodic nature really annoyed me. having to listen to a full credits list (that hardly changes) every 30-40 minutes annoys and takes me out of the story. I understand audible trying to get into the podcast scene, but if he whole story goes out at once, play it as a whole, or at least skip the lengthy credits. there's also a few editing errors included, so not perfect. overall though, I really enjoyed this, and my only gripes are with the format

Great narration

I liked the plot and the narration was great but the story was very short with big jumps and the list of credits after each episodes was very annoying

Excellent and Imaginative

Really enjoyed this drama. A story very much of our time with so much current discussion about AI.

impossible to follow

the speech soundtrack is overlaid by a dreadful music soundtrack, making it impossible to concentrate on the story. useless. I only wanted to give it one star, the least possible, but it came up as 2 stars

An interesting story very poorly produced

This is a most intriguing tale which has excited my interest. However I'm finding it nearly impossible to listen to because of the poor sound quality. The actors seem to be sitting on top of their microphones with a lot of clipping and distortion. The sound being 'dry' in the extreme, we then have this horrible artificial reverb further distorting things. On top of that we have the pointless music. Really head-ache inducing listening. Such a shame as I'm enjoying the story but really struggling to understand the dialogue. The actors are also jabbering rather. I'm constantly having to skip back to catch things I've missed.

Listened to it in a day but it went a bit mad towards the end

I was absolutely gripped by this for the first...75 per cent. Then it went mad. A real shame, great story, fascinating listen with lots to think about. I think it's just hard to act out all the crazy rushing about bits without making your audience a bit fed up.

Bad story, lackluster sound design, good performer

Cliche, bad story structure and boring sound design. Not even the strong performances of the main cast could save this production.

Promising start but poor finish

It seems to end just as things are approaching the climax. it's like the last chapter is missing.

Compelling listening but predictable

This story is well produced and compelling enough that I was keen to listen to the end, however the plot is not particularly sophisticated and I guessed the villain very early. An entertaining listen that doesn't require a lot of mental application to be enjoyable. Reminded me a lot of a dr. who script.

Can't recommend

Pro's: Production was awesome. Actors were 1st rate. Story premise was outstanding. Con's: 4 hr experience for monthly credit of $16.12. For some crazy reason they decided to say the credits about every half hour, Be warned if you listen to this book you will hear all of the credits at least 9 times! You will know all of the actors, the music guy the studio manager and even the runner, whatever that is etc. etc., The credits last about 30 seconds each time they run. Extremely annoying! So although it is an outstanding production, I can't recommend using a credit on it. I would recommend it on a daily deal. You can click on my name and see I give honest reviews.

The top review on here is incredibly misleading.

So I'm surprised there isn't as much attention on this then the single review on Audible. The only other review on here was incredibly misleading too. I overlooked it because the complaint seemed superficial. The main complaint by the other reviewer was that there are 30 second 'credits' 9 times. And that deserved a 2 star review? First, no the credits are not 30 seconds, it's 3-5 seconds and they are quick closing credits to each chapter. AND the credits absolutely do not go over "the actors, the music guy the studio manager and even the runner, whatever that is etc. etc.," The credits are literally just 3 names, the 3 main voice actors, so as long as it takes to say 3 names is the credits. I don't know why a reviewer would say such a blatant lie about a audiobook like that, so much for honesty. This was a amazing production and story. Filled with a full cast and sound effects. It really made the story immersive like it was playing a movie out in my head. The story was also very well done, but admittedly it's a theme that's sorta been played out. I enjoyed my time with it to be sufficiently entertained but it's no legendary work that I'll take with me forever. That's ok though, sometimes having a brief entertaining, high quality experience is perfectly fine. I recommend the credit or daily deal on this. I'm a huge supporter of these full cast productions and totally want more books like this.

Loved this... but wanted more!

Great performances, and story. I'd love for there to be a spin-off or sequel.
