Summary

Rory Miller's Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected includes seven elements that must be addressed to bring self-defense training to something approaching complete. These elements are: legal and ethical implications, violence dynamics, avoidance, counter-ambush, breaking the freeze, the fight itself, and the aftermath. Training that dismisses any of these areas leaves you vulnerable.

Another cold clear dose of reality from Sgt Miller

As a former practitioner of a martial art it's nice to have some of your assumptions confirmed by someone who's been there and returned.

However, Rory Miller goes beyond the fighting to show just what a small part physical skills play when thinking about your personal safety and the predators you may come in contact with.

A great read and sage advice and as ever he raises lots more questions to ponder on.

Very informative

This book educates the reader in an area seldom examined. “Why using violence is rarely the best choice to deter violence.” Instead of spending valuable time and money learning how to inflict injury on another human being, the only guaranteed life saving method is to learn how to avoid violent people and dangerous situations.

Excellent! Thought-provoking and insightful

It is a perfect beginning for getting ready to face violence, which as you learn in the book is much much more than training in martial arts. Both content and the narrator are excellent. The whole is written and read in a matter-of-fact no-nonsense manner, with clear-cut insightful observations. I highly recommend it

Everyone needs to listen to this book.

When I state "everyone", this means from late teens, adults, male and female.
This book is an eye opener and painfully true.
If you feel you are a person able to defend yourself in any situation, hang tight and be prepare to find out how little you are actually prepared.
This books takes you from recognizing a situation, how to avoid a situation, as well as potential aftermath of a situation that most people are completely unaware.

A must read!

violence can happen anywhere anytime. ignoring the fact does not make it less true. It is better to prepare and this book is a great tool in doing so.

insightful, Useful, and Pertinent

If your head is not buried in the sand, laptop or smartphone, and you've felt that old brain pushing you to be wary - you noticed, and you did nothing; this book is for you. You cannot afford to not be ready - Everything will not be okay if you dont make it that way. Great collection of skills and advice.

Extremely important info

Miller’s book provides a great overview on the types of violence and includes important distinctions that other authors tend to overlook.
