Summary

Watch My Back is the story of one man's search for courage. Depressed, bullied, intimidated by life and indoctrinated to believe that this was his lot, Geoff Thompson, on the verge of a breakdown, decided to fight back. In a bid to confront his fears, he took a job as a bouncer in one of Britain's roughest nightclubs. Over the next 10 years, he was involved in hundreds of brutal and bloody fights that left two of his friends murdered and many more in prison. Geoff reached the top of his trade and became addicted to violence. Then it all changed.

After nearly being killed in a gang attack, and almost killing one of his attackers, he was forced to reassess his relationship with violence. After writing down his experiences, Geoff discovered a flair for writing.

This is the story of an ordinary man who faced his fears and took himself from bedsit to best seller but very nearly got killed on the way. Geoff Thompson is now the author of over 30 books, a stage play and a BAFTA-winning short film. This book is now a major motion picture: Clubbed.

This book changed so many pathes!!

First ready this at the age of 17yrs, when it was 3 separate books, "Watch my back", "Bouncer", and "On the door". Changed the course of my life then as I could relate to Geoff's story. Which led me into the merky world of Door work in the late 90s!
Geoff really lays it on the table for you, the good the bad, the highs the lows!!
My own work on "BackStreetKarate" is very much influenced by Geoff's early work.

A great book by a great man

I've read this years ago in paperback and came back for a second visit as it is such a great book. The pages are dripping with life experience and the descriptive writing is second to none. Geoffs witty writing makes it hard to put the book down and despite the content leaves you laughing your head off most paragraphs. Nice one Geoff, keep fighting the good fight. Side note, the narration is also awesome!

A MUST READ ! BRILLIANT.

I rarely leave reviews for books, let alone audiobooks. However from time to time, I come across an absolute gem of a book and feel obliged to leave a review...this is one of them books.

This amazing book sent me on a whirlwind of emotion. This book is at times sad, funny, shocking and inspiring...and also a brilliant page turner too.

It really is a must read! Also the narrator is perfect I actually thought it was Geoff himself he told it that well. Please read this book folks it has left me feeling inspired I honestly cant praise it enough.

Jack Russell

Either I have grown up and see things n my head differently like how small a wagon wheel is now or this book has been re written in an attempt to try to make it funny. From.what once led me to purchase all from pavement arena to real punching and so on. Not sure if it's just the narrator but after chapter 3 I stopped with total disappointment.

FREAKING AWESOME BOOK - BEST AUDIO BOOK SO FAR

I really am not sure where to start - this book - the story, the reading, everything about it is freaking amazing!

It's a gritty story of a very tough man. It's a story of a scared young boy and later man facing and conquering his fears. It's a story of a man chasing and realizing his dreams. It's a treatise on fear and adrenalin affects on a person. By the end of the book you just want to freaking meet this guy.

Just get the damn book already and listen to it. It really is that good. And the narrator ROCKED! Best read book I have listened to.

In the Extreme

What did you love best about Watch My Back?

It was very well written and both funny and gruesome. I really enjoy when stories are told like this. It's raw and real with a good dose of humor.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Geoff himself.

What about Simon Trinder’s performance did you like?

He tells the story like he is Geoff Thompson.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both!!!

Book about personal development, life & violence

Would you listen to Watch My Back again? Why?

Yes for a refresher on the life lessons and insight to real life violence.

What did you like best about this story?

The look at real life violence and how it really occurs.

What does Simon Trinder bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

You just have to love the British accent. Although an British to American dictionary would have been handy a few time :)

Any additional comments?

Great book. I would really recommend it to young males say 16 to 28 years old. One for the life lessons it offers and two for the insights to real life violence. He shows you the steps that confirmations take on in real life. If you know the steps, you can avoid the dance.
