Story
People are the problem. They're always the problem. If a business person goes home frustrated, if they talk with their significant other about it, if they lay awake at night stewing about it, inevitably the problem is some person at work - a colleague, subordinate, or boss. Handling people issues is every leader's major headache. It's what takes up the majority of their time and - more important - the bulk of their head space. Every leader can and must develop this most important of all management skills.

These traditional approaches are often at the expense of ongoing, continuous feedback and focus on looking back at what has or has not been achieved rather than looking forward.

Your CEO just came to you, the HR leader, and said she was hearing rumors about the turnover rate going up. She asks you why this might be happening and how it is could be affecting the bottom line. Are there certain leadership issues? Are engagement levels changing? Is there a problem with the company culture? These are all logical questions. You have hunches for answers, but you have no way to prove those hunches. You know your CEO is going to want data to support any argument you make.

The traditional culture of "fitting in" and "going along" spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule, or intimidate.

Great story, stuffy narrator
This was the book I needed to recharge my mindset within HR. We can feel alone sometimes and often question why we do what we do and this book is exactly the reasons. The narrator sounded stuffy the entire book which was distracting personally. There were some things that would have crossed over better with reading the physical book.
