Story
A chilling and dark fantasy from bestselling author Raymond E. Feist. Successful screenwriter Phil Hastings decides to move his family from sunny California to a ramshackle farmhouse in New York State. The idea is to take some time out, relax and pick up the threads of his career as a novelist. Good plan, bad choice. The place they choose is surrounded by ancient woodland. The house they choose is the centrepoint of a centuries-old evil intent on making its presence felt to intruders.

Six years had passed since the redoubtable knight Sparhawk had triumphed over the evil God Azash and returned to Elenia with Queen Ehlana, his bride. And now a new danger had arisen to threaten the peace of Ehlana's realm. The trouble had started quietly. At home, bandits began to plague the hill country. In neighboring Lamorkand, the customary political unrest turned ominous with whispers that the bloody heroes of old soon would rise again.

Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil god Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgrath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected the West. Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.

A great read 📚

Summary
The first book in the Darkwar series, from worldwide best-selling author of Magician, Raymond E. Feist.
The Conclave of Shadows, the undercover organisation charged with the protection of Midkemia, have problems: the evil magician Leso Varen is still at large, and thousands of portals to a parallel dimension inhabited by the cruel and fiendish Dasati have been discovered in Novindus.
Leso Varen, a powerful and malignant magician with the power to possess and transport himself from body to body, and his Nighthawk assassins are plotting chaos and annihilation in the royal house of Kesh. The Nameless One is awakening and needs Varen to help him reemerge completely and tip the balance of good and evil in the world, plunging Midkemia into darkness and ruin.
But when the Conclave attempt to warn the emperor, it becomes clear that many of the truebloods - nobles related by birth to the emperor - are already Varen's slaves, both willing and unwitting, and the Conclave are forced into a race against time to save Great Kesh before evil engulfs the land.
Flight of the Night Hawks begins a brand-new series from the master of fantasy, set on a grand scale, revisiting the exotic political intrigue of Great Kesh (touched upon in the classic Riftwar books) and carrying the reader into a dark underworld of crime and black magic.

Too simple a plot
Too little happened in this book. Excellent to get back info the world of Pug and his friends, but the story was very simple. No twists, no betrayals, no bad decisions. Nothing new and exciting except a part explaining about the gods and their relationship with the worlds.
I am a Feist fan but this is not the best of his work.

I enjoyed this one like I did many of the early books. It featured plenty of Pug, Nakor and other loved characters and the story was compelling so made me want to continually listen. There wasn’t any major twists or surprises, a bit formulaic, but a good story nonetheless.

Good Story, but does not reach the Greatness of the Riftwar Saga
This is a good story, expanding on the stories of the Conclave of Shadows. But I keep hoping for the greatness of the Riftwar Saga to return. There is just not the same sense of complexity and adventure as there was in the beginning, and the characters lack depth and colour.
Still, a good listen.
Masterfully told by Peter Joyce! Always an amazing performance.
