About this listen

Ahren: Ahren's life consists of being beaten up by his drunkard father or bullied by the village lads. But at the annual suitability tests for apprenticeships, the young boy finds himself selected by Falk, the guardian of the forest, to be his apprentice and his world is turned upside down.

From his new master, he learns the skills of archery and how to fight the Dark Ones. And then, on the day of the Spring Ceremony, there is another unexpected turn of events. He touches the Stone of the Gods and it illuminates for the first time ever. It isn't long before a cantankerous wizard turns up and urges Falk and Ahren into action.

The Naming: Two Einhans have been found but the third is still at large. Time is of the essence. Ahren's Appointment as the 13th Paladin - assisted by the three Einhans - must occur by the winter solstice. If not, He, Who Forces will awaken before his time and plunge the unprepared peoples of Jorath into the depths of darkness.

The Brazen City: The saga of the 13th Paladin continues. Join him and his friends on their adventures in the Sunplains and enjoy meeting his old friends in Deepstone again.

Note: This audiobook includes Books 1-3 in the 13th Paladin series.

I haven’t listened to many fantasy stories, other than LitRPGs, but thought I’d give this one a go considering the first three books were free. The overall plot feels a bit generic, but the characters and paths they take are different and original enough to make it worth listening to. The only problem is that I don’t really like the MC very much and I’m not sure why.

The narrator is fairly decent although some of the women sound more like men and a few of the characters’ voices overlap a little too much. Also, an elf with a Welsh accent doesn’t make me think of the typical elf you would usually think of. I keep thinking I’m temporarily being transported to an episode of Fireman Sam, with someone’s mum that happens to be able to cast magic.

There is enough of a cliffhanger and unanswered questions to make me want to keep listening, so I’ll probably go ahead with buying the next in the series.

Enjoyable

A very enjoyable series - it was a bit like taking a D&D character from level 1to 8 but I actually really enjoyed that. The characters are great and while the plot was a bit predictable there was something quite comforting in that.

Reads like a D&D campaign

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this boxes. There's plenty of blood sweat and tears for the young apprentice, whose life is followed throughout the 3 books. Lots of characters to love and hate with a wizard who changes your attitude towards him in practically every chapter. There's plenty of humour and sarcasm throughout and finally a bit of a cliffhanger at the end which gives the impression that there's more to come!
