About this listen

Sparhawk, the Pandion Knight and Queen's Champion, returns from a long spell of exile to find his native land overrun with evil and intrigue, and his young queen grievously ill. Indeed, Ehlana lies magically entombed within a block of crystal, doomed to die unless a cure can be found within a year.

But as Sparhawk and his allies - who include Sephrenia, the ageless sorceress, and Flute, the strange and powerful girl-child - seek to save Ehlana and the land, they discover that the evil is even greater and more pervasive than they had feared.

"[A] graceful, fluid style of storytelling." ( Publishers Weekly)
"[Eddings] draws once more on his particular strengths, combining heroic yet humorous characters with exotic settings and tangled politics to create a fast-moving fantasy that will appeal to his large readership." ( Library Journal)

Great story, I finished the audiobook despite the awful narration by Greg Abby, which is monotonous and uneventful.

Shame about the performance...

I'm a person who enjoys reading fantasy novels and I was sure that this book would be enjoyable. Indeed, I liked the story more than I expected and will definitely buy the next book in the series.

I would like to emphasise on the amazing skills of the narrator, though. He did such an excellent work, I was quite impressed while listening to various characters of the book. He really gives those characters a unique soul by his voice. I would love to praise his work more but I'm afraid my English is not good enough to express my feelings completely.

Wonderful book + amazing narrator = hours of fun

Struggled to get into this, at times it seemed to be just a list of names and places with no context and no map to reference.

Difficult to follow

The story itself is a long time favourite of mine but the narration is utterly abysmal.
The choice of accents, styles and inflection that Greg Abby has tried to use for certain characters (in my opinion) is completely wrong. The preceptor of the Pandion Knights for example. A strong military leader, a man used to giving orders and making himself heard during battle. You would think that he would be given a voice and demeanour to match. Greg Abby however, decided to use what I can only describe as a weak, submissive, barely audible voice and this is only one of many issues I have with the reader.
To summarise, great story but read it yourself to avoid disappointment from Greg Abby's reading

One of my favourite series ruined by truly awful story telling. Lasted 2 chapters before I quit it.
