Summary

The Survivors' Club: Six men and one woman, injured in the Napoleonic Wars, their friendships forged in steel and loyalty. But for one, her trials are not over.... Since witnessing the death of her husband during the wars, Imogen, Lady Barclay, has secluded herself in the confines of Hardford Hall, their home in Cornwall. The new owner has failed to take up his inheritance, and Imogen desperately hopes he will never come to disturb her fragile peace.

Percival Hayes, Earl of Hardford, has no interest in the wilds of Cornwall, but when he impulsively decides to pay a visit to his estate there, he is shocked to discover that it is not the ruined heap he had expected. He is equally shocked to find the beautiful widow of his predecessor's son living there. Soon Imogen awakens in Percy a passion he has never thought himself capable of feeling. But can he save her from her misery and reawaken her soul? And what will it mean for him if he succeeds?

Tragic Heroine and Carefree Dandy

Mary Balogh below has to be one of my favorite authors I love the way that she get you to feel the characters emotions, she gets you on one of their sides backing them rooting for them.

I also like the way she doesn't write about the "perfect" character. Her main characters always have a flaw that instead of making them unappealing makes the character actually very appealing.

I wouldn't sure how I would really feel about the hero of the story he just seemed to be such a wastrel with no direction. He is actually the perfect choice for Imogen. I thoroughly enjoyed this book

The Charming Duke

Lady Barclay (Imogene) is a member of the Survivors Club. The death of her husband Dickie during the war has haunted her for 10 years. When her husband's father dies, a distant cousin named Percy assumes the title of Duke and descends on the estate and changes the lives of all who live there including the two old Aunties/Cousins and the ugliest dog on earth who follows Percy everywhere. He also changes Imogene's life with his irascible sense of humor and utterly charming personality. Imogene and Percy are drawn to each other almost from the first, but the courtship is fraught with hurdles. They are not too high for our intrepid hero however. He'll do anything, sacrifice anything to be with the woman he loves.

Maybe the best of the Survivors series!

Ms Balogh at her best! The story is tight, the conclusion awesome, and the reader is a treat! Something to listen to again and again.

I liked this better than the last one

This was quite good but then I love the series. I found this more enjoyable than the preceding book. The narration is pretty much perfect.

I've been waiting for Imogen's story and it was a sad but good one. A few twists. I thought the last chapters were a bit rushed but, overall, this was another hit.

Now on to the final book in the series. Sad to see it end.

Great listen!

Very happy to have found this on sale. The plot had an unexpected twist and Rosalyn Landor's acting of the intense scenes was exquisite.

Not her best, or even close...

I love MB books. They are usually corny, romance novels with steam. This one felt contrived. Everyone that followed the series was probably, like me, looking forward to Imogen's story. I was expecting a better storyline.

I keep thinking the next MB will have less mind babble and ...

I keep getting disappointed. All the page fillers not only have a negative impact on the writer but also do not encourage great following. I can not even finish this book as the first couple of hours were about stray cats and dogs and then about how the hero hated having everyone in his inherited home and then all of a sudden attraction where there was none before. Not a well written story but performance was fabulous.

The magic of the heart!

The wit, the joys and tears ....the magnitude of two wanting hearts....forgiving and surrendering to what all hearts are capable of....to give and keep on giving. All this and more in this beautifully written novel!

The best of the Survivor's story.

Even though I hadn't read the last book yet, this one had me captivated the entire time. To me, although I think each book and plot was excellent, I think this one had the best story. I can't wait to read the last one.
