Summary

A gripping psychological thriller from the bestselling author of Follow You Home and The Magpies.

It was the job she had dreamed of since childhood. But on her very first day, when an unnerving encounter drags up memories Sophie Greenwood would rather forget, she wonders if she has made a mistake. A fatal mistake.

What is her ambitious young assistant really up to? And what exactly happened to Sophie's predecessor? When her husband and daughter are pulled into the nightmare, Sophie is forced to confront the darkest secrets she has carried for years.

As her life begins to fall apart at work and at home, Sophie must race to uncover the truth about her new job...before it kills her.

The Devil's Work

I was first introduced to author Mark Edwards' work via Audible and as a result, have enjoyed listening to his various titles. This, his latest release, was a crushing disappointment. Why? well, it was all an overstuffed gothic- horror-meets-workplace-from-hell mishmash and the plot was pretty hyperbolic and downright silly at times. I didn't return it though, as I would for other titles, so it must have gripped me somewhat.

The narrator's rendition of the main character, Sophie's, black country accent was really quite awful; it sounded like somebody doing a really bad impression. That said, the rest of her characters were impressive, hence the 3* rating.

Oh dear, I do feel somewhat unable to recommended this title. As a person with Asperger Syndrome I was also a bit peeved to hear the condition used as an excuse for one of the character's personality flaws.

Dreadful narration

I was really looking forward to listening to this book as I have read all the others by this author. The story was great but I struggled to finish it as the narrator was terrible. Dreadful accents which really spoiled the story for me.

Not great story. Not great narration. Sorry

The story is predictable at times, unexciting most of the rest of the time. I'm afraid the narrator didn't do it for me either.

Gripping!

One of the best of Mark Edwards books. Absolutely fantastic, so many twists and turns. Loved how part of it was set in Brighton as I used to live there!

Good but not as good as his other books

I enjoyed this but it is not as good as Mark's other works such as Because She Loves Me or Magpies. The supposed Black Country accent is awful and ranges from Scouse to mock Birmingham, being a Black Country girl myself I know this is not how we talk. I don't think there is much need for an accent in this narration.
I liked the pace of the story and how it was told in the present day and with flashbacks.

Chilling and thrilling

This.book had me hooked from start to finish. I liked all the twists in the story and the two paralell.narratives. The.narrator was good although her voice was at times annoying. I recommend this.book to lovers of thrillers.

Gripping stuff

Enjoyed this audio book - it's the first one I've listened to by Mark Edwards though I've read all his others so I knew to expect something gripping and psychological. I didn't think the plot was quite as clever as some of his others as a lot of loose ends needed to be explained by the policeman at the end, however still a really good story from someone with a dark and clever imagination. Great narration - she did all the accents really well.

Save your time and don't start listening

What would have made The Devil's Work better?

The story was very slow and I stuck with it despite the awful narration and found the end a real anti-climax. I might have enjoyed it more without the awful midlands accent.

What could Mark Edwards have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I didn't buy in to the characters so I don't believe I could like the story with any tweaking.

How could the performance have been better?

The main character was portrayed as wimpish and the accent was appalling. A different narrator may have helped.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really. I was hoping that it would end sooner, regardless of the outcome. It was like a bad movie that you expect to improve but doesn't.

Any additional comments?

I would have returned this book had it cost any more than £2.
