About this listen

From the number one international best-selling author of Holy Island.

Are you afraid of the dark?

After his climactic battle with notorious serial killer The Hacker, DCI Ryan is spending the summer with his fiancée within the grounds of Cragside, a spectacular Bavarian-style mansion surrounded by acres of woodland.

When they are invited to attend the staff summer party - a Victorian murder mystery evening - it's all a joke until the lights go out and an elderly man is found dead. It looks like an unfortunate accident but, as the dead man's life begins to unfold, Ryan and his team of detectives realise that all is not as it appears.

When a second body is found, terror grips the close-knit community, and Ryan must uncover the killer who walks among them before they strike again....

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

Like so many, I'm hooked on the DCI Ryan series so read the book as soon as it came out. It was good, but not, it seemed to me, as multi-layered as the earlier ones - that was my original thought. Not quite so many nuances... A little more black and white. No narration though, that was to follow later, and I did wonder if it was worth buying both.

Definitely! As soon as Jonathan Keeble had read the first chapter I was hearing the light and shade I'd managed to miss when reading the book at too much speed when it was first published. He really is a superb narrator, and has made this series his own. All the familiar characters come to life again - and I do have a sneaky thing for the lovely Frank Phillips.

Please, Ms Ross, keep writing this series - and please don't ever change the narrator.

Well worth the wait

This luckily came up as a Daily Deal but I have already heard the previous DCI Ryan stories so I was thrilled to get the next edition at a bargain price

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it

This series for me is like the gift that keeps giving, I love DCI Ryan’s team they seem very solid and have been through a lot. Interestingly there is a new Superintendent and someone that Ryan had a brief romance with over ten years ago, she is now married and I think there will be trouble ahead for Ryan and his wife to be Anna, but time will tell….

This instalment is about contains fraud, blackmail and murder and as usual Ryan and his team will get to the bottom of it….. not to mention the deranged escaped killer fixated on killing Ryan ….

*Another Thrilling Instalment*

As with all books in this series, this novel is both interesting and enjoyable. It is light relief, but I have really got the DCI Ryan bug now - and what more can one say ?
Again, an excellent narator.

Enjoyable.
