Summary

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Victoria Schwab comes a sweeping, spooky, evocative adventure, perfect for fans of Stranger Things and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn't like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead...and enter the world of spirits. Her best friend is even a ghost.

So things are already pretty strange. But they're about to get much stranger.

When Cass's parents start hosting a TV show about the world's most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh, Scotland. Here, graveyards, castles, and secret passageways teem with restless phantoms. And when Cass meets a girl who shares her "gift", she realizes how much she still has to learn about the Veil - and herself.

And she'll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.

New York Times best-selling author Victoria Schwab delivers a thrillingly spooky and action-packed tale of hauntings, history, mystery, and the bond between friends (even if that friend is a ghost...).

Pretty good teen book, but the accents?!

Interesting story, good premise. Genuinely awful accents. I say this with good humour but don't listen to this if you're at all sensitive about English or Scottish accents. Really it was very distracting and unintentionally funny!

not bad

ok so it's more of a short story than a book to me..Jacob was a fun and different take on a ghost and the story was light-hearted and an easy read..I did however feel this is more aimed at teenagers and not a 44 year old man..I bought this as I enjoyed vicious!..all in all tho I did enjoy..my only critique on the audio is a moment or two of dodgy Scottish accents!

No Cat

I have no idea why there's a black cat on the cover of this book. The character's family has a cat but it's not in any way involved in the story, so if you're hoping for a ghost cat companion as I was you will be disappointed!

Good and fresh

Well written and performed. Cute middle grade story. Worth the listen.
I loved the friendship in this story. So nice and pure. Jacob was my favourite character. Very well and so tragic. My heart aches for this boy.

I Would Read Schwab's Shopping List If I Could

“Every time I get nervous or scared, I remind myself that every good story needs twists and turns. Every heroine needs an adventure.”

I've said this once and I'll say it again: I would read Schwab's shopping list if I had the chance. City of Ghosts was AMAZING, and I highly recommend the audiobook if you get the chance! It's whimsical, it's cute, it's slightly creepy and ahem, it takes place in Edinburgh -- only my favourite place in the entire world.

Spooky fun

Cassidy Blake is best friends with a ghost named Jacob. Ever since Jacob saved Cassidy's life, the two have been mysteriously linked: Jacob can cross through the veil (what separates the ghost and living world) to be by Cassidy's side, while Cassidy can also cross into the spirit world. What's more, their bond means that Jacob can read Cassidy's thoughts.

I enjoyed Jacob and Cassidy's relationship so much. Cassidy is very protective of Jacob and the two are constantly looking out for each other, making this a sweet friendship dynamic. Though, as the story progresses, Cassidy realises that Jacob may be keeping secrets...

Cassidy's parents are a quirky ghost-hunting team, despite not being able to see the ghosts their daughter can. When her parents get an offer to turn their book series into a TV show, they jump at the chance. Cassidy is therefore whisked away to Scotland, Edinburgh, to accompany her parents as they film the most haunted places on offer. Cassidy's parents added a fun element to the story and I also loved the setting of Edinburgh. Since I've been to the haunted places mentioned, I could imagine everything clearly and I was happy that the author had obviously done her research. It was fun seeing how Cassidy - as an American - viewed the city that is close to home for me. (I'm very thankful she eventually enjoyed her British fish and chips... I would not have taken the insult lightly).

The book is filled with great twists and turns, wonderful characters and fittingly spooky settings. The only thing that bothered me was the amount of Harry Potter references. It was strange because they held no relevance and only took me out of the story. I hope the author won't continue this into the second book. But I will definitely be reading on; this was a joy to read.

As for the narration: prepare for bad Scottish and British accents. Despite this, I still greatly enjoyed the audiobook.

Beautiful YA offering from Victoria Schwab

Great story and narration. Schwab's storytelling has never disappointed me, and this YA book is no exception. Since it is YA rather than some of her adult offerings, some who come to this book from her others may be a little surprised at the lighter tone and more straightforward storytelling. However, she doesn't condescend to her audience and offers a rich, interesting story with great characters (where Schwab shines brightest) and a compelling story line. The narrator does the story justice, as well, which is important to a well-executed audiobook!

Intended for a Younger Crowd

I live anything the V Schuab puts out. I even found this entertaining; however, it is intended for a younger crowd. I would say 5th grade and up. kinda mysterious, kinda spooky, but not the typical dark, gothic, bloody, action packed Schuab that I love!!

very good story...cant wait for more

This was so good. A very friendly and light read about a girl who can see ghosts and has a best friend who actually is one. A little predictable but none the less good. I enjoyed her adventured and the story of her parents being ghost hunters.

Great listen

Good book, very middle grade appropriate with some good scary parts for kids. Have to say I hated how the mom was read and if she had a big part it might have ruined it for me. But since her part was small I could easily overlook it.

Overall definitely worth it.

Meh

Okay... I guess.

I think my expectations were a bit too high for my first Victoria Schwab.

I'm not typically a middle grade reader, but I think if I was I would have enjoyed this one a bit more. It was a very predictable story, and it felt geared towards ages 9-12 more. My 10 year-old nephew would probably love it.

I listened to the whole thing because it was short, but even the decent narration didn't help keep my interest. It took me about two weeks to listen to a story that was just over 5 hours long, and that's not a great sign.

Fine, I guess, but I would recommend only for a younger audience or a seasoned middle grade reader.

A n Excellent Listen

First book of the year and a very good start to my goal of listening to more audio books!

I see reviews saying how it's intended for a younger crowd but listening to it instead of reading it myself really gave a different feel for me. It was read so well that I felt excited and scared and sometimes creeped a bit from scary scenes. It did not feel at all like a story that's meant for a younger crowd for me and I enjoyed every second of it. I honestly felt like I was 'watching' one of those anime I enjoyed watching back in high school.

The only negative I have for this audio book is how the narrator's voice for the males isn't that much distinct from each other. Cassidy's dad's voice and Jacob's voice were a lot similar. But! The narrator's voice for the females were really done well! I especially loved how she voiced Cassidy's mom because it really made her personality shine which made me really like the character a lot.
The narrator really did put effort into getting the voices of the characters distinction as much as she can which really made the experience so much better and I appreciate it a lot. She even gave them accents!

The narrator for this audio book has really set the bar for the kind of narrations I want for subsequent audio books I'll get in to. I look forward to listening to the sequel of this book and hopefully it's still by this same narrator.

this story is quite adorable and the reader, I think does a pretty good job of giving the characters life. I'm quite excited to listen to the next one.

Loved it!

Loved it! Can't wait to get started on the next book in the series.

Adding narrator to my list of favorites.

The book wasn't an "edge of your seat" type of story but it was interesting and held our interest. Listed with an 8 year old that loves reading but never sits still unless there's a book in her hands.

She sat through the entire reading with me completely engaged the entire time.

Highly recommend if you enjoy ghost stories. ♡

"The longer he stays, the stronger he'll get."

A girl who can see ghosts.
Her best friend IS a ghost.
And a city full of ghosts...

What kind of spooky adventures awaits them?
