Gods do exist. And if the scroll in my hands says the truth, they have a secret academy where their recruits train to become demigods. I’ve done really bad things in my life, but stealing Callie’s opportunity to attend the God’s Academy? It’s got to be the worst. Story
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Summary
A mysterious shipwreck could unlock ancient powers… or send her to a watery grave.
Targa MacAuley feels more at home on dry land than in the watery realm of her mermaid ancestors. After 17 years on solid ground, she fears she’ll never grow into the creature her mother hoped she’d become. To keep her mom’s homesickness and true identity under wraps, Targa signs on for a mysterious salvage dive in the Baltic Sea.
Her plan to blend in with the rest of the crew is spoiled when she catches the eye of a handsome local. A freak accident and a strange connection to the ancient shipwreck below attract even more unwanted attention. With both her mom’s secret—and her life—in danger, Targa must finally find the courage to unleash the currents surging deep within.
Born of Water is the first book in The Elemental Origins, a series of captivating YA urban fantasy novels which can be read in any order. If you like new twists on mermaid lore, simmering romance, and close-knit mother-daughter bonds, then you’ll love A.L. Knorr’s nautical adventure. Embark on a deeper dive into the story's lore with The Wreck of Sybellen, a companion novel included with the audiobook.

Brilliant modern mermaid story
Every since I watched the Disney’s little mermaid as a girl I have loved a mermaid story. 🧜♀️. So many of them have very frustrating sad endings. I don’t want to give too much away, but I was happy with the ending, delighted to find a second book ready for me to read, now awaiting the third.... Good fast pace, nice detail, likeable characters, plenty action. Well written.

Born of Water
I've had Born of Water for some time, but I was hesitant to read it for fear of being let down. I have to say I am disappointed in myself for waiting so long. Born of Water was a well-done mermaid/siren story. The ending was a bit abrupt, and it left me with some unanswered questions, not a lot of them. It is a series, so the questions may get answered later. The lead character is incredible; she's relatable and likable. The romance developed at a natural and realistic pace. I look forward to the next book in the series because I'm sure it will be as fantastic as this one.

Brilliant coming-of-age story
I read these books before I listened to them, so it was really nice to hear it brought to life so well. Even as an adult there is still something rather nice about having a story read to you! The story is about a young girl who is the daughter of a siren, and about the twists and turns in her own tale as she grows older and becomes a young adult; There is magic, romance, mystery, and excitement as the story develops, eventually intertwining with the stories of her friends as well. The entire series is worth reading, and if this recording is anything to go by, listening to it as well!

Great start to a series
Targa is the daughter of a mermaid. Her mother, Mira, is disappointed that Targa is not a mermaid and is enduring living on land for her daughter - if her child had been a boy, she would have left him behind on land so that she could return to the seas. During the summer holidays, the company Mira works for as a salvage diver, has a commission to find the wreck of a ship in the Baltic Sea. She takes Targa with her. There are a few twists in this - which I won't reveal. Whilst there, Targa meets Anthony, who works for the man who has employed Mira's company. One day, whilst Targa and Anthony are out on a boat, the come into difficulties and are thrown into the sea. Targa's natural mermaid nature emerges and she saves Anthony from drowning. Later in the book, we find out that Targa is a very powerful mermaid - an Elemental. Although the book ends abruptly, there is a reason for this, and you will have to listen to the next books for the continuance of Targa's story, along with the other Elementals. This is a very good coming-of-age book and Gabra Zackman does a very good job of narrating the story. I'm now off to listen to the next book in the series. .

YA and Adult, Confusing and Great
I really like the personalities and the differences between species as to what is perceived as important and worth worrying about. I’m a fan of elemental-based stories. This is a great twist on water, and one I’ve never personally encountered. It was a fantastically engaging story! Now to the rest of my review subject... The YA is due to the 17/18-year olds about to become seniors in high school. I totally appreciate the realistic reversal of roles between mother and daughter. It did cause some brain glitches occasionally, since Targa “read” like an adult, but wasn’t. Yet. I get other cultures and species have different ideas about teens and intimacy, but if you’re going to blur that line, why not twist it to 2275 and recognize if you can do something that inherently requires responsibility just in case the consequences are expensive, then you can own a company. Why wait until 18 for one and not the other? Totally dig the book on balance.

Beautifully written story proving Mermaids are real.
Strong world and character development. Mermaid's must keep in contact with salt water, the saltier the better. This makes life difficult for them. Targa lives with her mother and her mother thinks her daughter will never make the change to Mermaid. On a trip to a restoration dive in the Baltic, she falls into the water and drowns. She awakens underwater able to breath hear and see perfectly. Her new life starts.

I'm Hooked!
I love this book. I am addicted to the story now and must hear the entire series. I like fantasy stories very much and romance as well. This book has those things plus some action, mystery, and intrigue. The thing that I should say that is important, it is very clean and suitable for a teenager to read. And the history from the diary at the end was a nice touch too. Thank you A.L.Knorr for the great way you describe the setting without dragging it out like I've seen so authors do. I like to be able to SEE the setting but sometimes other authors share way too much detail. You have that part just right. Great Listen!

great story but...
I really enjoyed the story. However, I have a huge problem with the 17 year old minor getting involved with a 27 year old man. That is not okay. Especially since this book is listed under children's books and young adult books. We should not be teaching young girls that this is ok. It is not!! There are too many young girls that are taken advantage of. We should not glorify a relationship with an older man at age 17.

Utterly Captivating Series
I happened upon this series, downloaded the first title and was completely enthralled. Knorr has a way with her characters - makes them accessible and so very interesting. Perfect escapism, brilliant writing that isn’t formulaic but draws you in. I inhaled the entire series and was actually sad when I finished the ninth and last book in the Elementals series. This is the perfect read/listen for times where you need to immerse yourself in another reality. For those who loved Harry Potter, Narnia and their ilk, you can’t go wrong with these wonderful fantasy novels.

Good Read
I loved this series. Honestly, the age gap of the love interest made me more than a little uncomfortable. It was hard to let myself really love them as a couple because of the age gap. Not sure why that seems to be a theme with most of the love interests in this series but its odd. other than that major detail, the story was good.
