The first in a sparkling new 1950s seaside mystery series, featuring sharp-eyed former nun Nora Breen.

In a house like Gulls Nest, curiosity might prove fatal . . .

After thirty years in a convent, Nora Breen has thrown off her habit. Her fellow sister Frieda has gone missing and it's up to Nora to find her. Nora's only clue is that Frieda was last seen at Gulls Nest boarding house. So she travels down to the seaside town of Gore-on-Sea, takes a room and settles in to watch and listen. Over dubious - and sometimes downright inedible - dinners, Nora gathers evidence about the other lodgers. At long last, she has found an outlet for her powers of observation and, well, nosiness.

When one of the lodgers is found dead, Nora decides she must find the murderer. Not least because she suspects the victim knew Frieda. Could solving this mystery help her to understand what has happened to her friend?

'Kidd has imagination to die for and a real command of plot and character.' Guardian

I really enjoyed this book, wonderful blend of cosy murder mystery blended with the great style and wit of Kidd’s writing, quirky character traits, great moments of humour and intrigue. Clever and keeps you hooked until the last line. Siobhan McSweeney’s narration is a masterpiece. Highly recommend.

Lovely quirky listen.

Rarely do I immediately love a new detective as quickly as I did Nora (a former nun). The story flowed along and the characters lightly sketched, yet fully formed as we met them initially were fleshed out naturally as the story progressed.
And the story was filled with such humanity and the crime within treated so gently.
Nora is a cosier version of Miss Marple if we must compare to other characters in the genre.
As for Rideout the police inspector I developed a liking for him as the characters interacted.
I look forward to meeting Nora and Rideout again (should we be so lucky).

Oh what a lovely crime novel.

Surprisingly gripping story given its gentle nature. Nicely, but not brilliantly narrated. I shall certainly look out for the second in series.

Great writing

Nora Breen, a former nun for the last 30 years, decides to give up the habit to look for her friend Frieda, who has been missing for some time. Her only clue is that she stayed at a boarding house called Gull's Nest, so that's where she starts. There are a few rules and regulations, but she is quite unobserved, listening and watching.
Then there is murder, and she must try to find out who and then she might get answers to what has happened to her friend.
The story flowed quite well, and the narration was good, well worth a listen.

More of a Cosy Mystery
