About this listen

Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tap-dances his way into her home; a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe.

Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, one bright morning when a single, earth-shattering event threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Spanning four decades and moving between suburban Essex, the wild coast of Cornwall and the streets of New York, this is a story about childhood, eccentricity, the darker side of love and sex, and the pull and power of family ties, loss and life. More than anything, it's a story about love in all its forms.

I love when an author reads her own work as it feels like they embody each character so authentically. Fabulous and moving story on many levels and with some unexpected twists as well as a clear thread running throughout. One of those books you feel sorry to finish - I want to experience it all over again!

Loved this story. Still Life was wonderful and this is more melancholy but still wonderful characters you fall in love with. Just so refreshing to have such an original story and main players. Loved it

I really enjoy Sarah Winman’s storytelling and narration, she has a poetic style and impressive delivery.
Still Life is one of my favourite novels and this was equally engaging with a wistful tone that is also quite brutal in its honesty and melancholy.
I believe this story will stay with me.

Thoughtful and moving

The early story is more engaging than the end, which is a bit too drawn out for me - but worth persevering with. Great characters with warmth, humour and tragedy nicely woven in - well worth a read!

Moving family drama

Without meaning to, this book really has touched my soul. It was in parts confusing and in other parts quietly brilliant. I highly recommend
