About this listen
The Woman Unknown: Deirdre Fitzpatrick is married to a man who wants to know where she really goes when supposedly taking care of her sick mother and calls on the expertise of Kate Shackleton, amateur sleuth extraordinaire, to investigate.
The Gentleman: Everett Runcie is a banker facing ruin and disgrace. His American heiress wife will no longer pay for his mistakes or tolerate his infidelity and is seeking a divorce.
The Murder: When a chambermaid enters Runcie's hotel room, she is shocked to find that he is alone - and dead! Suddenly Kate is thrown into the depths of an altogether more sinister investigation. Can she uncover the truth of her most complex and personal case to date?

"Kate Shackleton joins Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs in a subgroup of young, female amateur detectives matured by their wartime experiences. They make excellent heroines." (Literary Review)

A good story
A very enjoyable book, well read and entertaining. I got frustrated once or twice when the plot seemed a bit contrived and the main character made foolish decisions which seemed out of character.

Good story
I found the first two hours or so a bit slow but I persisted thanks to the hight rating and the contents of reviews and I am glad. The story took off and the book became gripping and difficult to put down. The narration is excellent.

Excellent
I love the Kate Shackleton stories and this one didn’t let me down. I didn’t manage to solve it myself and enjoyed thoroughly. The performance was great, as always.

Great book
I love Kate Shackleton books. The stories are great, the narration perfect and the glimpses of life in the 1920s is very interesting. I have read 3 so far and all out of order but it doesn’t matter.

Gentle Enjoyment
Being from the West Riding I love the Kate Shackleton stories with their references to places I know so well, some of which have Jong disappeared. The storyline is entertaining and thoroughly entertaining.
