Story
It took Beacher longer than he figured to find the Colorado River. By the time he made camp, the sun was at the west back. “Just right,” he said to himself. He cut some bank poles, and found some toad frogs. “The smaller ones work better,” Beacher thought. “Now, all I need are some hooks and line, with no weights. Just run your hook under the frog’s backbone, near his hind legs, and he won’t bleed a bit. He’ll swim toward the bank all night.” Tolbert knew that the forked-tail catfish was a top-feeder, unlike the round-tail, yellow catfish, which fed off the bottom.

Story
Eli Jefferson left his home in Sweetwater, Texas, intent on doing as a good son should, and helping to raise the money his father needed to pay the upcoming bank note. After finishing a cattle drive and earning the money needed, Eli set out for home, ecstatic. As he neared home, Eli was bushwhacked by an unknown gunman. The bullet creased his head and left him with amnesia. With no memory of who he was, he stumbled unknowingly on the burned remnants of his family’s ranch. His mother and father had both been brutally murdered, and the cattle stolen.

Story
Jud Low had been through his share of hard times and troubles. He’d seen his friend killed, the ranch and cattle stolen. But Jud and his partner, Ted Lewis, had taken revenge for their friend and gotten his life’s work back. Now, all Jud wanted to do was have a dance with a pretty new waitress that had come to town. Getting together a dance at the last minute wasn’t easy, but Jud managed it. The dance with the new waitress, Nancy, lasted longer than he’d bargained for, with her returning to the ranch with him.

Story
Jud Low was 18 years old, from the East, and as green as could be when his father decided to pull up stakes and set them on the Oregon Trail. Not far from Abilene, Kansas, the two were put out of the wagon train after Jud’s father got into an argument with the wagon master. They headed south. Not long after, Jud found himself alone, his father having frozen to death during a cold winter night. He made his way south and stumbled onto a small cattle ranch, finding himself a job and a great friendship. When his new friend is murdered and robbed, Jud finds himself forced to become a man.

Story
The old mountain man woke up with a splitting headache, and his limbs felt a lot stiffer than usual. His joints and legs were sore, but not because of lack of use. No, the old mountain man was not one to be sedentary or inactive. Considering that he lived alone in the middle of a secluded patch of forest, a slow and inactive life was a luxury he could not afford.

Story
The events that would lead to the showdown of mountain men versus the Arikara tribe actually began in May of 1823 in South Dakota. It was here in the vast expanse of prairie land that extended as far as the eye could see in all directions that a motley crew contingent of men and animals traversed. The contingent was definitely a strange and colorful lot. They were composed of pack mules and horses that wearily carried the men and their supplies on their backs. The men themselves looked in every direction and kept their eyes and ears alert for even the slightest hint of a threat.

Story
Levi Essen polished his old rifle. It was the same rifle he had used so many years ago when he was still a trapper. The rifle was heavy, cumbersome, and downright clunky to use by today's standards. It was loaded up the old-fashioned way with a jammer stick, some powder and an iron ball for ammunition. The gun had to be fired one shot at a time and reloaded after each shot. Such a rifle was definitely made obsolete by the Winchesters and the other repeating rifles that were in use now.

"You want that Indian woman? You're going to have to get through me first to do it!” the young man said. “We had a deal! Tell him, Indian!” The old man turned to the old Indian, Heron's father expecting sense and reason. He did not get either. “I think it would be better if you both settled this first. Whoever would win, would get my daughter.” The old mountain man couldn't believe the words that came out of the old Indian's mouth. “We both settle this first? What are you talking about old man? We had a deal!"

Charles Woods, captain of the Texas Rangers, rode up to the corral at JC’s small spread outside of Midlothian and looked over the fence at JC lying flat of his back in the dirt. “Dad gum JC, seems that’s about the same spot you was in last time I’s out here. Don’t you think you’re getting a bit old to be breaking bronc’s? I’d say it’s time you quit.” JC got to his feet, dusting himself off. “I’m not that old, an’ you only pay fifty a month. I get a hundred and fifty for every horse I break. Now which job do you think I’d quit first? What’s on yore mind.”

Dan Brady and Jimmy Ray. One of White lineage, the other of Indian decent. Brothers by choice (and possibly necessity) from being raised in a Chicago orphanage run by nuns. They parted ways after being kicked out of the orphanage. Dan became a lawman. Jimmy Ray changed his name and became an outlaw. When their paths finally crossed again, Brady wired for help from the Texas Rangers. Being afraid his long-ago friend would come after him, Brady took the time to write down everything he could recall about their past lives.

Story
The fires of a dream burned and stoked behind young Angus Faraday’s eyes. He longed to be somewhere other than the four walls of his workplace. The anvil and the casting iron seemed to mock him silently, whispering to his young ears that this would be the only life he would ever know. Such a possibility was not a terrible thing, mind you. Not for some men, however, young Angus Faraday could not accept such a fate. His spirit was bold, daring, and strong and he could not accept such a fate. Even if it seemed to be inevitable and set in stone.

Story
The Indians called him "Death Wind" for his ability to blend into the forest, swoop down and bring death and destruction, and just as quickly blow away. His shooting skills were next to none, and it is said that if he could spot any target in the distance, he would never miss. He also gained his fearsome name from the fact that he was known to sprint far, fast, and wide through the forest. This was truly an amazing feat for a man that was solidly built and easily over six feet.

“They've got us surrounded, John!” Potts said. Colter nodded grimly. “I know. They're signaling us to paddle to shore. I don't think we have much of a choice,” he said. Potts did not answer his friend. He was already hastily loading and priming his musket. He would be able to get a single shot off at best. At worst, the Indians would probably scalp him before he even managed to fire. Both men silently acknowledged that their deaths were imminent. Colter paddled the canoe up to the shore. The sight of so many Blackfeet was intimidating and he didn't know what to do.
