This timeless comedy of manners is considered one of Molière's most probing and mature works. While it's still an exemplar of 17th century farce, Molière went beyond his usual comic inventiveness to create a world of rich, complex characters, especially in the cynical title character Alceste, played here by the Tony Award-winning actor Brian Bedford.

Jean-Baptiste Pocquelin, better known by his pen-name Molière, was France's greatest satirical dramatist. Such was his influence on the French language that it is often referred to as 'the language of Molière', and he has been dubbed 'the French Shakespeare'. A leading 17th Century comic actor and director, his genius encompassed all aspects of stage comedy, and his plays continue to appeal to audiences today. Included here are six of his masterpieces, as heard on BBC Radio.

Initially banned in France by King Louis, Molière's celebrated social satire Tartuffe exposes false piety and hypocrisy in the Catholic Church. When a pious fraud worms his way into a wealthy family and manipulates the patriarch into giving up his fortune, it’s up to his family to expose the truth before they end up in the poorhouse!

Molière wrote some of the most durable and penetrating comedies of all time. The Imaginary Cuckold and The School for Husbands are two of his grand farces of marriage and misunderstanding, one set in Paris and the other in the provinces. In The School for Husbands, a tyrannical husband-to-be seeks to isolate his ward, while unwittingly carrying her messages of devotion to her lover. In The Imaginary Cuckold, an enraged husband imagines his wife is unfaithful, but is reluctant to defend his honor.

France's master comic playwright has a field day with the subjects of hypochondria and our blind obedience to doctors. Molière’s witty attack on the medical profession has more than a little resonance today. Translated by John Wood, adapted by Beth Milles.

"Le Tartuffe ou l'Imposteur" est une comédie de Molière en cinq actes et en vers créée le 5 février 1669 sur la scène du Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Orgon est l'archétype du personnage de cour tombé sous la coupe de Tartuffe, un hypocrite et un faux dévot. Il est, ainsi que sa mère, Madame Pernelle, dupe de Tartuffe. Ce dernier réussit à le manipuler en singeant la dévotion et il est même parvenu à devenir son directeur de conscience. Il se voit proposer d'épouser la fille de son bienfaiteur, alors même qu'il tente de séduire Elmire, la femme d'Orgon, plus jeune que son mari.

Il Tartuffo è una delle tappe fondamentali dell’ascesa di Molière alla corte del Re Sole. Non ci sono dubbi sull’importanza di questa commedia nel percorso artistico di Jean-Baptiste Poquelin: con questo lavoro, si comincia a parlare molto di lui alla corte e non solo. C’erano stati già altri successi, naturalmente, ma quest’opera drammaturgica divertente colpiva i falsi devoti, per cui intorno all’autore si scatenò una rissa letteraria che lo pose al centro dell’attenzione di tutto il teatro francese del Seicento.

Alceste, the misanthrope, hates everyone including himself. But unlike in many pure farces with their cliche stock characters, the characters here are much more well-rounded, and who knows—Alceste might actually grow and change throughout the play.

"Tout le monde me prend pour un homme de bien ; mais la vérité pure est que je ne vaux rien." Tartuffe. Quel poison s'est insinué dans le foyer d'Orgon ? En laissant Tartuffe entrer dans sa maison, Orgon ne pouvait pas imaginer qu'il allait mettre en péril sa fortune, son honneur et l'unité de sa famille. Dans cette pièce hautement provocatrice, Molière démontre toute l'étendue de son talent pour fustiger, sous couvert du rire, les impostures d'un discours religieux drapé dans les oripeaux de la dévotion.

"Messieurs, en un mot autant qu'en deux mille, je vous dis que je ne suis point médecin." Sganarelle a beau protester, rien n'y fait : on veut qu'il soit médecin, quitte à le rouer de coups de bâton pour cela. Son premier cas ? Une jeune fille obstinément muette. Aux grands maux les grands remèdes, et ceux de ce médecin malgré lui sont des plus étonnants !

C'est un classique et pourtant cette célèbre pièce de Molière reflète bien le monde actuel. Dans une société où la compromission est indispensable au respect de l'ordre social, Alceste, le misanthrope, ne peut trouver sa place.
