There is a persistent and incorrect idea, reinforced by countless film misrepresentations, that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were always staid and dull British chaps of middle years (or older), with Holmes a spry, cranky, and impatient eccentric, and Watson a white-haired and portly Boobus Brittanicus, a la Nigel Bruce. Students of the true and Canonical Sherlock Holmes know this to be a falsehood. David Bennett Hill was an American politician and renowned orator. During Hill’s illustrious political career he served as a US State Senator and the Governor of New York. Hill delivered his "I Am a Democrat and Not a Revolutionist" speech, what is now considered his most famous speech, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on the 9th of July 1896. The speech took place in the heat of voracious debate regarding the value of silver in the US at the time and its vast ramifications from a political, economic, and public standpoint.
