Although it is one of the smaller counties, Buckinghamshire has a strong individual identity, with the Chiltern Hills, steep roads going down through beechwoods and the blue distances of Aylesbury Vale. It is historic, with plenty of Oliver Cromwell and Royalist connections. There are some thriving county towns: Aylesbury, High Wycombe, and Milton Keynes. It is also conveniently close to London. The Grand Union Canal cuts right down from north to south and there are several sailing clubs.

John Millais is the most paradoxical of Britain’s major Victorian artists. Already recognized in his teens as prodigiously gifted, he chose to risk everything by becoming a founder-member of the Pre-Raphaelites, a revolutionary group of neo-primitive painters who, despite the support offered to them by John Ruskin, the most influential critic of the day, risked being treated as outcasts by the ruling artistic establishment.

Very seldom in London can a major show of modern and contemporary art at a highly respected national institution have received such universally negative reviews. As I write this, not all the verdicts on the Royal Academy’s exhibition of Modern British Sculpture have been delivered. However, it is already clear that the majority will be hostile. Cv Publications' series of relocation guides to English counties was launched with my survey of Oxfordshire. It was a journey of discovery. Rather than just passing from point A to B, my excursions followed an ad hoc schedule of diverse routes. I found myself turning down obscure side lanes leading to little villages hidden in a marvelous landscape of deep countryside.

Cv/VAR 124 publishes an interview recorded in 2010 with Mat Collishaw, first published in Interviews-Artists Volume Three, explores the range of his work, from 'zoetropes', animated models exhibited at the Freud Museum and installed at the Victoria and Albert museum, to photo-works and projections, with the artist’s original interventions in the natural world that fuse histories, desires and dreams. This edition includes studies of Nam June Paik and other essays on contemporary art.

The Anatomy Series of 2001 was made in a quantity of eighty panels, taking three weeks to complete. The set considered the landscape of the human physical system. The panels were worked on flat, painting twelve at a time in rotation. They were laid out on an old framed work which also served as a container for the pool of colour washed over the textured surface. Two inch square wooden cubes were used to stack the panels in small towers to dry out.
