Summary

Witch-hunting plagued much of Europe throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, but Scotland’s witch hunts were among the most severe. Combining eyewitness accounts with actual trial transcripts, British journalist Elizabeth Lynn Linton provides a fascinating glimpse into the black magic and fairy lore behind Scotland's infamous witch trials.

Fascinating if dark history,

A fascinating history, very dark and shocking. It shows the power of superstition and the church over the lives of normal people at that time. The book is a history of true witchcraft cases in Scotland, it is shocking how easily mostly women could be condemned, tortured and convicted on no evidence or evidence that would be laughed out of court at other times. If you are clumsy, if your cattle die, if a woman cures your child, cry witch and get some poor person condemned. The archaic language makes some of the stories hard to follow, but it is still fascinating . The narration is excellent, easy to listen to. I received a complimentary copy from the Author and am leaving a honest voluntary review

more gory chronology than historical examination

whilst the research is commendable the book equates to Chronicle of events rather than setting the account within religious or political context.

I'm not bewitched by this book.

I've been interested in the withches of Scotland for a long time so was looking forward to learning more from this book but I ended up disappointed.

The book is comprised of a lot of very short chapters, some less than two minutes long, telling the stories of several victims of the Scottish witch trials.

The trials just cover the allegations against each woman or man with the outcome without giving any substance, most of the time you didn't even know the age of the accused. It did tell you which area they lived in but that was it. The allegations and outcomes for the accused are remarkable similar so it seemed to repeat itself over and over again.

The narration was good, a bit overdramatic in parts but overall it was a good balance of seriousness and drama. I liked the fact the narrator had a broad Scottish accent and the use of the auld Scots language.

The Witches of Scotland

I'm new to the author, but the subject matter within this book is one that I'm interested in. It is put together well and read well. I listened to this over a period of time instead of in one go. I will be going back to re listen to this book as it is one that makes you want to go back over it.
