For over 20 years, psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman has examined the quirky science of everyday life. Most self-help books encourage you to think differently, to think yourself thin, imagine a richer self or visualize the perfect you. This is difficult, time consuming and often doesn’t work. Drawing on a dazzling array of scientific evidence, psychologist Richard Wiseman presents a radical new insight that turns conventional self-help on its head: simple physical actions represent the quickest, easiest and most powerful way to instantly change how you think and feel.

Story
At the office of Safe Steps, Victoria's dedicated 24/7 family violence response call centre, phone counsellors receive a call every three minutes. Many women are repeat callers - on average, they will go back to an abusive partner eight times before leaving for good. 'You must get so frustrated when you think a woman's ready to leave and then she decides to go back,' I say. 'No,' replies one phone counsellor, pointedly. 'I'm frustrated that even though he promised to stop, he chose to abuse her again.'

Consider the $20 bill. It has no more value, as a simple slip of paper, than Monopoly money. Yet even children recognize that tearing one into small pieces is an act of inconceivable stupidity. What makes a $20 bill actually worth $20? Our attention has never been as overwhelmed or in demand as it is today; we've never been so busy while accomplishing so little, and we've grown uncomfortable with boredom and a lack of stimulation and distraction. In Hyperfocus, Chris Bailey - described by TED.com as 'the most productive man you could ever hope to meet' - provides profound insights into how we can best manage our attention. He reveals how the brain switches between two mental modes - hyperfocus, our deep concentration mode, and scatterfocus, our creative, reflective mode - and how the surest path to being our most creative and efficient selves at work is to combine them both.

Story
Legions of self-help authors rightly urge personal development as the key to happiness, but they typically fail to focus on its most important objective: hardiness. Though that which doesn't kill us can make us stronger, as Nietzsche tells us, few authors today offer any insight into just how to springboard from adversity to strength. It doesn't just happen automatically, and it takes practice. New scientific research suggests that resilience isn't something with which only a fortunate few of us have been born, but rather something we can all take specific action to develop.

This collection of 11 wide-ranging lectures which appeared originally in 1933, was based on lectures previously given when Jung was in the process of absorbing a considerable period of study of Eastern religions, Gnosticism and other religious sources. It was a time, according to the translator Cary F. Summary
Bloomsbury presents The Sustainable(ish) Living Guide by Jen Gale, read by Jen Gale.
Easy, do-able, down to earth ideas and suggestions for everyone to help save the planet.
If you want to save the planet, but your to-do list is already pretty long, and remembering your reusable coffee cup feels like a Herculean task, then this is the book for you. Covering every aspect of our lives from the stuff we buy and the food we eat, to how we travel, work, and celebrate. This audiobook provides stacks of practical ideas to slot into your daily life, alongside a gentle kick up the butt to put your newfound knowledge into action.
Practical tips include unsubscribing from all the tempting emails that drop into your inbox with details of the newest clothing range or the latest sale, and keeping a mug next to your kettle to work out how much water you actually need to boil each time, as overfilling kettles costs British households 68 million on energy bills each year.
Find out how to fit sustainable living into your life in a way that works for you. Change your impact without radically changing your life, and figure out the small steps you can make that will add up to make a big difference (halo not included).

Too girly for me
Whilst the author/narrator seems like a lovely person, and the book was very well narrated, as a single male without children I couldn't really relate to the author and much of the book's content. It just felt overly girly/mumsy. I don't like to generalise but I think most women/mums would really enjoy it, whilst most men might want to consider a different book on sustainable living. Just my opinion though!

Simply brilliant
I listened to the sample and thought ‘oh great, more information on what I can do to be more sustainable’ and upon opening Jen says “if you’re already on your way to being sustainable this probably isn’t for you” and I suddenly thought ‘oh maaaaan’ BUT this book is brilliant. Jen is a fabulous story teller and you WANT TO LISTEN to every word ( I think it took me about 3 days to finish because I just did not want to stop!) if you’re wondering how to be more sustainable or have already found ways of doing so but just want to know you’re not alone then this is for you! Thank you Jen ❤️

The author gives many tips that are mostly easy to have a more eco-friendly lifestyle, in all areas of life. I definitely changed a few things after reading it and keep others in mind to apply later.

Loved this book! Jen's approach was very realistic and relatable. This is a great beginner's guide full of resources. The only thing I might note is that as an American some of the phrases used were a little different and the resources were sometimes based in the UK. However I could always infer the meanings of phrases or was inspired to look up US resources.
