Summary
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching portrait of the bloody price of power, The Son is an utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American West through the lives of the McCulloughs, an ambitious family as resilient and dangerous as the land they claim.
Love, honour, children are sacrificed in the name of ambition, as the family becomes one of the richest powers in Texas, a dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege. Yet, like all empires, the McCulloughs must eventually face the consequences of their choices.

An absolute must,
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I really enjoyed this book (so much I have written my first review). The narration was fantastic and so was the story. I will defiantly listen to it again in a coupe of months.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

What a ride!
Perfectly read, by wonderful voices. An important story of America, that resonates still.. it's painful.

Great story with outstanding narration
What did you like most about The Son?
Philipp Meyer created Eli McCullough - Will Patton's exceptional narrative gave us his beating heart! If you're a fan of Steinbeck or Cormac McCarthy you'll love this!

Love this book!
Will Paton brings just enough menace and empathy to his character to keep you on his side even when he is complicit in some unspeakable acts. The story is just long enough and as it unravels you find yourself totally lost in the narrative and not wanting to come back to reality.
I would highly recommend this book if your are a fan of well written and well read American literature such as Thomas Berger or a solid Stephen King.

One of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to, and I’ve listened to a few. Such a great story and amazing narration.

Engrossing from beginning to the end.
A generational tale of a dynasty that was created through the savage clashes at the frontier of the native American tribes, Mexican settlers and the American western expansion. Refreshing in that no party is judged as being worse than any other, but that all were willing to do whatever it took to achieve their goals.

I didn't want this story to end...
I'm not sure what was better, the fantastic performance by the voice talent or the storyline. I haven't read a book in years that was this good..I almost dreaded every new chapter because I knew it took me closer to the end of the book... an outstanding story, intertwined histories, thoughtful writing, and it really made me pause to think in many places about the passage of time, change, and the passing of traditions and learning between generations.

Saga of the old West and it's demise
Split into different characters and timelines. I enjoyed some a lot more than others and the novel failed to really bring them all together into a cohesive piece. It felt disjointed throughout, though the writing and research is great and there are some wonderful moments. The story of the Comanches was the most engaging and poignant.

Fantastic tough listen
Graphic account following two families in Texas and Mexico over 100 years beginning in the early 1800’s. Beautifully read, vivid and harrowing, nothing permanent. A great story

Loved this book
Wonderful stories spanning three generations, Eli, Peter and Jeannie McCullogh. Each beautifully set in its time and place. The reading was superb.
