About this listen

Marco Stanley Fogg is an orphan, a child of the '60s, a quester tirelessly seeking the key to his past, the answers to the ultimate riddle of his fate. As Marco journeys from the canyons of Manhattan to the deserts of Utah, he encounters a gallery of characters and a series of events as rich and surprising as any in modern fiction.

Beginning during the summer that men first walked on the moon, and moving backward and forward in time to span three generations, Moon Palace is propelled by coincidence and memory, and illuminated by marvelous flights of lyricism and wit. Here is the most entertaining and moving novel yet from an author well known for his breathtaking imagination.

As an added bonus, when you purchase our Audible Modern Vanguard production of Paul Auster's book, you'll also get an exclusive Jim Atlas interview that begins when the audiobook ends.

Critic reviews

"This is a writer whose work shines with intelligence and originality." (Don DeLillo)
"In somber, cerebral, and terse narratives, Paul Auster has hunted down his obsessions. The missing father, the limits of language, the past as a crime we are driven to solve: from these themes, Mr. Auster has built a reputation as a post-modern gumshoe, fusing the conventions of detective fiction with Beckett-like despair." (The New York Times)
"The moon as a poetic and planetary influence over earthly affairs runs as a theme, wittily ransacked, throughout this elegant fiction." (Publishers Weekly)

I love the way the richness of the language gives form to marvellous stories that make you travel through times and spaces.

Absolutely wonderful. Such a pleasure to "read".

Paul Auster packs a lot into his novels and this is no exception. A story that surprises and is definitely a page turner. Joe Barrett's performance is just right, he gives each character their own identities but does not overdo it and distract from the story. Interestingly, Paul Auster has narrated quite a few of his own novels and I feel his delivery was always flat and a little dull.

AN INVENTIVE ODYSSEY

I am unable to describe it. I know that won't be any help. Fourteen Fifteen.

frustrating, but this might be the point

This is a beautiful book. The American novel at it's very best. Slow and steady, the narrative builds and the author engages and seduces. Don't expect fast food but expect a meal of exquisite proportions.

First Paul Auster (I can't believe he passed me)

Starts very slowly, hard to stay with it.
Then it becomes more interesting, very good writing - for a while.
Until the very end, where you get to know who everyone was, it feels as if the writer had several stories in his head which didn't quite add up individually each to a separate, completely story. So he moulded them together and wrote one book out of them. This actually very much might be the case. The connections felt a bit contrived, and I felt a little bit cheated at the end because it started as a book about one guy.
But then, in the second part, the old man that the main character worked for became very annoying with endless stories told with a grating voice by an insufferable character. While listening, I always had the sense that his stories were vastly embellished, if not even entirely made up. This was why, for me, this part became quite tedious. You don't really get to know who the old man was until pretty much the very end of the book, so it didn’t really make sense while listening, why an old, cranky, annoying guy's phantasmagoric tales were practically taking over, and why I should even be interested.
Thankfully, at one point, at least I was relieved of the grating, arrogant old man voice the narrator was using, as the rest of his storiew we told in the 3rd person.
Then, this happened the second time with yet another character on the scene with his entire life described in very unnecessary detail!
It was difficult to hold concentration, and hard work to finish the book.
There were points in the story, where I had actually forgotten how the book started and had to think a while and remind myself how I was even taken to what I was hearing at the time.
Nice writing but as a story, very tiring.
