About this listen

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Such a great story. The foreboding of the slaughter that was to come is evident throughout the tale and makes it a much deeper experience. A terrible event in the history of North America.

A classic.

Probably we have all seen and enjoyed the film. However don't let this stop you listening to this book. It's great, really enjoyable apart from the sad bits.. good narration too.

The depth and the sweeping beauty of the old west and the people who dwelt there for centuries, before America was changed by 'progress' touched a cord within me. Their worldview was without a doubt profound! The panorama, the drama, the truth of our eternal existence, jumps right at you and you have nowhere to hide. All you can do is just reminisce about a time, that you wish you could get back to. The innocence the natives had and profound trust in providence, hit me like 16 wheeler. I wish that world never ended, that's the tragic part. Highly recommend. Breathtaking!!!

Someone build that time machine already
