Summary

The ultimate guide to sheds from the renowned presenter of Shed and Buried.

When it comes to truly finding out who you are and what makes you tick, there is one thing that needs no online subscription to a cloud-based server with a password you keep forgetting. That, my friend, is a shed.

Your shed is your refuge. It's the place where you go when you need a break from this mad, crazy world. But a shed can only help you if it's not attached to the house. The minute you attach the shed to the gaff, or confuse the concept of a shed with the concept of a conservatory, or a home office or a Shepherd's Hut, you're doing yourself over. You're never, ever going to get spiritual enlightenment in a lean-to. That's like going to find yourself in Thailand and staying in the airport.

You need to make that pilgrimage to the bottom of the garden. Whether you're walking down a muddy track or crunching along a perfect gravel path, you have to get out of the house. Breathe in the fresh air. Then pull open the door, grapple for the light switch, fire up the heaters and turn on the kettle.

Once you're inside the four walls of your shed, you can do whatever you like. You're the king in there.

shedology loved it

OK I'm not a man and don't have a shed, although have an area awaiting one. if you love Henry's shows you will love this. an insight into the light and heavier side of stuff surrounding sheds. Will listen again while doing my tiny bits of restoration.....

Great Listen

Exactly how I plan to spend my later years. Going round old auto jumbles with a few mates, tinkering with old motorbikes and drinking tea. What's not to love?

masterful exposé

I love it when autobiographical works are read by the author, and Henry Cole makes a lovely job of this. I listened to it whilst working on motorcycles in my own shed and was happy to discover that his ideas of the ultimate shed requirements and standards run very close to my own. Yes, with hindsight I should have opted for the 45mm walls, but 28mm seems to be doing the job. I've reinforced my floor with 18mm ply and I doubled the number of floor joists, but carpet wouldn't allow me to move my bench as easily. otherwise I think we are about there. Well done Henry! Oh, and you are correct - women talk face-to-face, but men only really talk shoulder-to-shoulder. A life lesson for us all.

Shed talk

If you want to hear a bloke talking a load of old bo..ocks for 6 hours this is the book for you! And why wouldn’t you! loved listening to it took my mind of all that’s going on in the world. I now know how to make a cuppa tea properly what biscuits to eat in the shed and much more besides! I’m about to listen to it again so must be good.

Going to the shed without going there

The way the story is told by Henry it takes you to the shed without you having to go there. In my case not having one, yet!
It was both informative and light hearted. On a few occasions the wife wanted to know what I was laughing at.
For when you are not able to get to your shed to get away just pop this on instead until you can get there.

I Like Henry, I really do... but...

So, Henry's second book, I loved the first book, A Bikers Life, I have it in hardback & audio book. I have read the book 3 times and listened to the audio version countless times whilst running or in the car (sorry Henry... car... yeah I know!). I love the way it's like having your mate sitting next to you & just chatting! I was really looking forward to this second book then. Here's the issue though and maybe it is because I loved the first book so much and have become so familiar with it, but large parts of this second book are just word for word (minus the swearing) lifted from the first book. I am not talking just the odd paragraph being recited or quick overview of something from the first book to help the story along, I am talking chunks being lifted entirely and just repeated here. Did it spoil it for me?.... well yes, kind of, but yes I still listened to all of it, more than once, yes I enjoyed it & yes, if Henry does a third book I will definitely be buying it. It just seems a shame that rather than put new content into this book or, at least telling the same story but in a different way, the easy route of just lifting already published material, word for word from the first book was taken. With all of his shows and exploits I would have thought there would be a load of new, relevant material that could have been used. Ah well, as I said, I like Henry and I love the way he narrates so as I have said already, yep I still liked the book and I will listen again & again. Looking forward to fresh & untold stories in the third book though. :-)
