Summary

Random House presents the audiobook editon of Grease Junkie by Edd China.

'Think fast. Think big. Think the unthinkable!'

As you'll discover in his incomparable memoir, inventor, mechanic, TV presenter and walking tall as the definition of the British eccentric, Edd China sees things differently.

An unstoppable enthusiast from an early age, Edd had 35 ongoing car projects while he was at university, not counting the double-decker bus he was living in. Now he's a man with not only a runaround sofa, but also a road-legal office, shed, bed and bathroom. His first car was a more conventional 1303 Texas yellow Beetle, the start of an ongoing love affair with VW, even though it got him arrested for attempted armed robbery.

A human volcano of ideas and the ingenuity to make them happen, Edd is exhilarating company. Join him on his wild, wheeled adventures; see inside his engineering heroics; go behind the scenes on Wheeler Dealers

Climb aboard his giant motorised shopping trolley, and let him take you into his parallel universe of possibility.

Avoiding the Rock in the Road

If you're hoping for an expose of Wheeler Dealers, forget it. In fact, if you're just interested in the 13 or so series of Wheeler Dealers that you've watched on telly, forget them too. Edd hardly mentions the programme that made him famous or, when he does, it's kind of in passing. He's clearly put it behind him and is moving on. What we get, in this book, is all the other projects Edd has been involved with in the course of his life, from schoolboy to overgrown schoolboy. But. I like Wheeler Dealers! I'd have liked to have heard more about it. Not the gossip or infighting, just how it was made, how it built its fan base, why it became such a success. Edd was the reason I watched it. He's a likeable guy, and comes across well in this audiobook, but there's a steely side to him, I suspect, that means he has to get his way. He disguises it well, but he seems driven and motivated in whatever he sets his mind to. I enjoyed listening to the book, but I felt there was quite a big hole in it that could have been filled.

Edducational

Interesting to hear the back story of builds seen on Wheeler Dealers and to find out that there is so much more to Edd China than grease and Mike Brewer. An absorbing listen. More TV please Edd.

Some of the things you never knew about Ed

I really enjoyed this book and love that Ed is a normal guy that makes the extraordinary seem that much more achievable! The story jumped around at time but that’s part of its charm and making it reflective of how we all experience life. Thanks Ed and thanks Imogen for putting up with his antics we have all enjoyed.

Zen and the Art of Mechanical Tinkering

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. I didn't know about the Wheeler Dealers show but this popped up in my recommendation list and thought I would give it a go after listening to the sample. As a fellow nerd, I really enjoyed the sometimes lengthy segments about problem solving mechanical or concept issues. Have started looking at Edd's YouTube channel as a result and look forward to seeing many future projects.

It's a view into one of the most inspired minds in the automotive industry. I loved him on the show, but didn't realize the crazy history behind his persona.

Please apologize. This is crap.

What was I thinking? I thought I was going to be part of his experience with Wheeler Dealers and Top Gear. But all I heard was a cleaver guy that virtually makes the equivalent of a parade vehicle. I was expecting a guy talking about Porsche’s, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Corvette and other cars. Give Edd an award for all his cleaver vehicles. But seriously. Is this really enough to create a book after?
