Summary

"Atmospheric, suspenseful... A series to be devoured!" —Lucy Clarke

As The Shell House Detectives try to solve a family mystery, their investigation runs dangerously close to a murder case. Are the two linked?

It’s December in Cornwall, and Mousehole harbour is illuminated with its famous Christmas lights. Ally Bright is among the crowd listening to the carol singers—and then to the piercing screams that rip through the darkness. A body has been found, brutally murdered and dumped in a fisherman’s boat.

The victim is chef JP Sharpe and there is no shortage of people who might have wanted him dead. Eager for a new case for The Shell House Detectives, Ally calls ex-cop Jayden, but he’s keen to leave it to the police—until a letter in Sharpe’s pocket draws them into a seemingly unconnected family mystery. As they take on this highly charged mission, the duo can’t help scrutinising the murder suspects. Who among the close-knit community has reason to kill, and how far will they go to protect themselves?

As fear spreads, Ally and Jayden need answers—fast. Could the letter offer a clue to the murder case or will it reveal a terrible truth? And when a new witness comes to light, Jayden closes in on a desperate killer…but can he warn Ally in time?

Critic reviews

“Kate Rawson deftly narrates this atmospheric addition to the Shell House Detectives series.… Rawson blends congeniality and solemnity in her portrayal of the town's endearing characters, especially Detective Ally Bright, who is trying to move on after the death of her spouse, and former policeman Jayden Weston. Whispering adds a menacing edge to a story that keeps listeners wondering who the murderer is. With its Cornwall setting, this is an especially delightful listen for Anglophiles who love holiday mysteries.”AudioFile Magazine

“Atmospheric, suspenseful…A series to be devoured!”—Lucy Clarke, author of the The Hike

“Emylia Hall has woven a Cornish Christmas mystery that’s every bit as atmospheric and addictive as the first one.”—Kate Riordan, author of Summer Fever

Loved this!

I loved this second book in the series. The characters are interesting, the murder plot very entertaining with a really good twist and very well narrated. Looking forward to another instalment in the future…..

A gentle reminder of friendship and love

I love this book series… the crime/ detection seems to be a background to learning about human relationships.

In this one there were enough heart stopping crime/ detection moments alongside the inter relationship moments to ease the soul between the “offscreen violence”; enough peril to characters already loved to keep me reading when I really ought to be going to bed; and enough intrigue with new characters that you hope they have a place in future books to develop.

Now to wait until I can buy the next. There are times I wish I had never ending credits and the author always had a new book awaiting for me to read it… this is one of those times.
