Summary
Murder is a dish best served ice cold...
In the idyllic, small town of Dewstow, Margery and Clementine are eagerly awaiting retirement from their work on the front-line serving meals to the students at Summerview secondary school.
Their peaceful life is shattered when their kitchen manager is found dead in the school’s walk-in freezer. The police are adamant that it’s an open-and-shut case of accidental death. But Margery and Clementine are convinced that something more sinister is afoot and take it upon themselves to investigate.
As the dinner ladies inch closer to the truth, time's running out. Will the perpetrator get their just desserts or is everything just going to go down the pan?
A charming, cosy British mystery, The Dinner Lady Detectives is ideal for fans of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club or Murder, She Wrote.
Hannah Hendy lives in a small town in South Wales with her long-suffering wife and two spoilt cats. A professional chef by trade, she started writing to fill the time between shifts.

Not believable
The only good thing about this book was the narrator. The plot was thin, and the characters a mix of 1950s stereotypes.

I love a cozy murder mystery but this was just so forgettable and since joining the only one I’ve ever given a poor review

look clem! what, marjorie? limited vocabulary and
i applaud the intention of this book's publisher to donate a large part of their profits to charity. having said that, this book annoyed me to no end. the amount of time that people, buses and other vehicles careened, that people acted dramatically, that eyes were rolled back in heads to maybe never appear again. and most of all the amount of times that in the wooden dialogues people kept addressing each other by their first name: look, clem! what, marjorie? nothing is natural about that. finally, the plot twist was disappointing. one could see it coming from such a long distance, and all the side tracks were really just that. in one chapter, this whole plot could be done with

Disappointing characters and story
Sadly this book was not for me. Weak plot and characters. Not really sure the protagonists deserve the title dinner lady detectives - everything is discovered by accident 😂 One positive, narration is great! Otherwise think I would have given up.

Unimaginative ageist stereotyping & poorly written
Has the author ever met anyone in their 60s? Her eponymous heroines are supposed to be 61 and 62 years old – well below the age of retirement – but from the start of the novel we are subjected to patronizing allusions to their many physical infirmities: grey hair, dentures, poor hearing, poor sight, ‘old knees’, breathlessness on stairs, sciatica etc. Characters as incapacitated as she portrays are unlikely to be able to hold down physically demanding roles as mass caterers let alone walk miles or engage in solving murders. Perhaps living in Wales ages you prematurely? As a 64 year old with none of the ailments mentioned I found the book irritating, ageist and ill informed. But the real problem is that the author does not have the literary skill to develop realistic characters so writes stereotypes tagged with what she considers appropriate attributes for their age/class/region. A far better read is Robert Thorogood’s ‘Marlow Murder Club’ which presents an indomitable 77 year old sleuth who thinks nothing of going skinny dipping in the Thames – a well written and not offensively ageist audiobook. Or the popular Richard Osman series, although that is less well observed than Thorogood's writing. I will be returning the Dinner Lady Detectives.

If you like Agatha Raisin you’ll like this.
Loved this book. If you like Agatha Raisin you’ll like this.
Funny and very self-consciously written in the cosy detective/lesbian crime tradition.
Excellent performance from the narrator.
Recommended.

Absolutely fabulous!
I loved this book from the very start. Great story line, which kept one guessing. The characters were fabulous and were really brought to life by the unwavering skill of the narrator, Jenny Funnel. I cannot find the second book in the series on Audible, but I’ve found the third one and am just about to start that. I do have one tiny gripe- I wish the author (in the guise of Margery and Clement) would refer to them as ‘old’ or ‘elderly’ As a 64 year old, i do t consider myself old at all!! 😊

Cozy murder mystery
Checks every box for me. British, amateur sleuth, women protagonists, funny, and the perfect narrator. I can't wait to listen to the Christmas one.

Really??
Can’t wait for this author to age and realize that someone in their 60s is not elderly, frail and with dentures. Ridiculous

Light summer reading
This mystery is not going to blow you away, but I liked the the easy pace and side stories of the characters. No horrifying violence, only one murder. If you’re in to cozy mysteries, it’s pretty good.

Nothing Special Here
Ridiculous plot, well read by Jenny Funnell. By the time I reached the end of the book, which happened only after I increased the speed, I really did not like any of the characters and I really did not care about the solution. Ending indicated a next book, not for me!
