Story
This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse.

Story
What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Story
Religion was once the primary way to understand human behavior. This was certainly true when the book Alcoholics Anonymous was written in 1939. But, we have learned much over the past 80 years. Common Sense Recovery began as the journal of a long-standing member of AA, during a time in his life when he was struggling to reconcile the religious language of Alcoholics Anonymous with his new-found atheism and scientific understanding of addiction and the recovery process.

Many thanks to the narrator and others involved
Clear and effective. The very minor changes from the original “big book“ adhere strictly to the structure, meaning and intention of the original text. We lose some of the references that no longer resonate, like “John Barleycorn” and other verbiage from a hundred years ago. Also, some wordy passages are shortened - in my opinion, for the better when it comes to the average reader. This book was clearly produced with great care. The narrator does a beautiful job. His reading is so down-to-earth, it’s like having an old, trusted friend tell you a comforting story full of humor, compassion, and clarity.
