Summary

A sensual tale of four suitors’ pursuits of a former maid - as told by a lady.

Being a maid was much simpler than being the illegitimate sister of an earl. Lily Harkins has learned that lesson the hard way. Now, she has not one, but four aristocratic suitors. Her brother will expect her to choose one. Trouble is, she doesn’t want any of them. The handsome clerk she recently met, however, is another story entirely. She’ll just have to convince her brother that marrying a commoner wouldn’t be a huge mistake. And she knows just how she’s going to do it....

William Overby is perfectly happy with the middle-class lifestyle his job affords him. He was, at least. Until he met her. The lovely Lily is everything he could ever want in a wife. It’s just his unfortunate luck that she’s also completely out of reach for someone of his station. He knows he should stay away. And yet...he doesn’t. He can’t....

Can Lily and William find a way to bridge their opposite worlds and take a shot at happily-ever-after? Or will the dictates of an unforgiving society overtake the lure of forbidden love and the desire of a lady?

Romantic Second Chance!

A beautiful second chances story about Lily (the ex-maid) and William who works for her cousin.
There are some rather amusing recountings of how she met the four other men in her life who are all interested in her. The fifth one is William, of course, and the man who saved her virtue all those years ago.
Cleverly written, this story was very gripping for me and I just loved how it had me laughing most of the time.
It was a delight from beginning to end and I also enjoyed learning about the two main characters and being allowed to join into their lives. The other characters complimented them and filled out their story beautifully.
Michael Troughton's narration of the audiobook which I listened to is amazing and his voices are really good. He made it a pleasure to listen to.
My voluntary review above are unbiased and based on my own thoughts about this version of the story.

An entertaining story

I enjoyed this story, it was good to read of a couple who were not of the ton. Lily, the illegitimate sister of an earl is deciding upon a suitor, that will please her brother as well as herself. The story tells her relationship with each possible suitor. Lily was a likeable character, she was happy as she was, she had no pretences. William was a clerk but he had made the best of his opportunities and had ambition to go even further. They had a very good connection with each other but would her brother agree with Lily’s choice. On the whole the narrator read the story well, changing his voice to match the character. However, I wasn’t keen on the ghostly voice used for when people were thinking. Also, in Britain, clerk is pronounced as ‘clark ‘, I know this seems like a small point but when it was mention many times, I found it grated.
