Story
After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts, until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since the land has belonged to man and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated. It was prophesized that someday the demons would return, and only the descendants of Ramrowan would be able to defeat them. They became the first kings, and all men served those who were their only hope for survival.

Summary
Three times they tried to kill her. Then they hired a professional. She hired Riyria.
When the last member of the oldest noble family in Avryn is targeted for assassination, Riyria is hired to foil the plot. Three years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and the cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start life as thieves for hire. Things have gone well enough until they receive the odd assignment to prevent a murder. Now they must venture into a forgotten corner of southern Avryn - a place whose history predates the empire. As usual, challenges abound as they try to anticipate the moves of an unknown assassin before it's too late.
But that's not their only problem. The Countess of Dulgath has a dark secret she's determined to keep hidden. Then there's the little matter of Riyria's new employer...the Nyphron Church.
From the best-selling author of The Riyria Revelations comes the third installment of The Riyria Chronicles. Although part of a series, it's designed to thrill both new listeners and Riyria veterans wishing to reunite with their favorite rogues.

I've listened to all the riyria books and it's just as good as the others

Good story and great characters.
I really like these books and the short stories. This one opens up a bit more of the Royce back story. Good plots and the action flows in a believable way. I love the way the author concentrates on telling the tale rather than getting lost in his own literary style. A lesson many of his contemporaries should take heed off. I hope we see more of Royce and Hadrian in the future as there are not enough good characters in modern fantasy.
Keep it up.

Well written, well read and very fluent as always
Where does The Death of Dulgath rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A talented narrator and author make easy going of a slick storyline. A fine addition to the series.
What did you like best about this story?
The two main characters and their interaction are always an enjoyable experience.
What does Michael J. Sullivan and Tim Gerard Reynolds bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
A new dimension to the two main characters. As opposites their interaction and bickering seems both natural and enjoyably entertaining.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Many chuckles and a continued appreciation of an understated wordsmith in action. It is another perfect example of having the right narrator and direction, for the right author.
Any additional comments?
Just one gripe compared to the Riyira is that it seems a tad short by a chapter or two. Likely down to 'wanting more', but a slick production of work from a guy who seems a decent bloke. Next please =P.

Explains So Much :-))
What made the experience of listening to The Death of Dulgath the most enjoyable?
I am already a fan of the Riyria stories, and love the two main characters, but this story and the other two "prequels" have explained so much about the two men who make these stories so enjoyable. As to what made the experience enjoyable, well, I thought there would be no more Riyria stories, so I was pleased when I saw "The Crown Tower". When I spotted "The Rose and the Thorn" I was delighted. I was ecstatic when I found "The Death of Dulgath. I really do hope that Mr Sullivan writes more about these two fantastic characters. I also hope that Tim Gerard Reynolds agrees to narrate them.
What other book might you compare The Death of Dulgath to, and why?
It would be difficult to find a book, or series that could be fairly compared to any of the books in The Riyria. I can't think of any with characters with a relationship as complex as the one that exists between the two main character in these stories.
What about Michael J. Sullivan and Tim Gerard Reynolds ’s performance did you like?
Tim Gerard Reynolds brings the two main characters to life, and give depth and feeling to the stories. I apologize for not really paying attention to Mr Sullivan's contribution, as I needed to answer the door just as he started speaking, and he was all but finished when I got back.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I spent quite a bit of all these stories swinging from laughing my head off to choking up with tears. The emotional content is wonderfully done, and you really do feel for the characters, and care about what happens to them. The death of a particular female character actually made me cry.
Any additional comments?
I do hope that Mr Michael J. Sullivan will be returning to Riyria as I for one would love to read, or listen to more of these wonderful stories.

Silly story.
Not a lot happens and the ending is unsatisfactory. The plot itself is very silly. The narrator is very good and the interactions between Royce and Hadrian make up somewhat for the shortcomings of the story.
The last 90 minutes or so are bonus content- an extract from another series by the same author and a completely unrelated short story by someone different entirely. This makes for a bit of an odd end to the original recording, but I quite liked the short story.

One of the Best Fantasy Series!!!
Riyria Revelations and Riyria Chronicles are two of my favorite Fantasy series! The stories are well written with great plots but it is the characters Royce and Hadrian that really make these stories awesome. They are a such a mismatched pair but somehow work together perfectly.
The Death of Dulgath was a great addition to the series and I really hope there will be other books in the series! Well worth a credit!

Consistently Awesome!
I don't know how he does it, but Michael J. Sullivan has to be the most consistently awesome author writing today. In The Death of Dulgath, he spins yet another epic tale of Riyria's adventures that I just can't get enough of. I did find the ending fairly predictable... but I simply didn't care because the story was so fun. Before the story, there is a message from the author where he says he isn't sure whether or not there will be more Riyria books. Please take this review as my vote that the series continues!!

Another great chapter in the Riyria chronicles
Weather or not you've listened to the other Riyria tales first, you can listen to The Death of Dulgath. Michael J Sullivan stories continually get better as he hones his craft as a writer and he weaves another entertaining tale in The Death of Dulgath. We follow the two thieves as they travel through Avryn on a seemingly simple and innocent mission. But nothing is ever that simple for Royce and Hadrian. The story is enjoyable, but the real fun, for me at least, is the interaction between the two friends. MJS writes from Hadrian’s or Royce’s completely different POVs so wonderfully that the reader is completely immersed in that character.
Tim Gerard Reynolds does a superb job of bringing these two great characters to life. He is quickly moving up the list of my favorite narrators. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job.
The combination of TGR spot-on performance and MJS fresh and witty writing that keeps me coming back for more.
Royce and Hadrian's continually growing friendship erases any real differences between the two and what’s left is…well Riyria. Two who are one. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.

A solid, almost stand-alone, story.
I have enjoyed all of the Riyria books and like many others I enjoy just about anything with the characters of Royce and Hadrian so the Death of Dulgath was a welcome additional to my library. Tim Gerard Reynolds is his excellent self and hearing him voice Royce and Hadrian made me feel like I was back with old friends that I had not seen in a while.
The book is full of the usual "Hadrian = naive, Royce =cynical" repartee and for a while it seemed like more filler than substance, but there was more to the story than it first appeared and it eventually grabbed me. Although this is book 3 of the Riyria Chronicles it could just as easily have been a stand-alone tale. Except for a few references to the Black Diamond there is little to tie this adventure into the larger story arc and that lessened it a just a little for me.
Any Riyria fan should not hesitate to pick this up but if you are new to the series I would recommend that you start with book 1 of either the Riyria Revelations or the Riyria Chronicles. Why would I recommend that when this story is mostly stand-alone? Because I expect you to crave more Riyria after your first listen so you might as well start at one of the 2 customary beginnings.

I agree that there is nothing sadder than to see much loved characters wear thin. However, that is not the case here!! This story is every bit as rich and colorful as the first book in the series. Whenever Mr Sullivan gets the urge to continue this story I say MORE PLEASE!!!!!!!
Prior to reading this book I went back and re-listened to the whole series and enjoyed every minute of it. I am sure I will reread them again in the future. This is one of the finest series of books available in this genre and I have read a lot of them.
I can't leave without also giving a huge thumbs up to Tim Gerard Reynolds. I can't imagine anyone else who could have given a better voice to these stories!

Something Different
This book is the third and hopefully not last installment in the Riyria Chronicles Prequel series. I think I enjoyed this novel more than either of the first two books. This is because it isn't a setup book. The first two books in this series were obviously setup novels, which explained how Riyria came to be and create a basis for the main characters in these novels. This novel is something different. It is almost a mystery novel to some degree, which also is centralized around a job Hadrian and Royce are hired to do. As I hoped would happen this book focuses on one specific job in the two thieves careers. The novel continues the development of Royce and Hadrian as main characters and friends and shows the effects the two have on each other. Also, it shows us a new previously undiscussed part of the world in Mr. Sullivan's well developed setting. Finally, the plot again like most Riyria novels is not thoroughly complex, but it isn't simplistic either. It is the perfect plot to sit back and enjoy without analyzing every little detail. Like always the swashbuckling humor is entertaining and the two main characters generallly have a good time and cause good natured trouble. Although I will admit these novels are tending towards the more serious as the series continues. As always we receive another admirable performance from Mr. Reynolds, who makes the story come to life. I very much hope that Mr. Sullivan decides to write more novels in the series, because I will certainly continue to read them.

Another Excellent Edition
This series remains one of the best in this genre, and this most recent edition is fully up to the standards that come before it... Royce and Hadrien are two of the best characters in the genre as wll... The humor, especially the off center examples, are priceless... The narration could not be done any better... The story itself is really quite poignant, and the plot lines are thrilling and intriguing to any fan... The saddest thing is knowing that this series is likely finite and some point we'll have to say goodbye to these wonderful characters and stories forever... Until that I'm gonna enjoy the hell outta the ride...

I want more...
Would you consider the audio edition of The Death of Dulgath to be better than the print version?
This is one of my favorite series. All I can say is "more please..." I understand that Michael does not want to hurt these two characters by overwriting them... Between the story and Tim's narration I feel I need to stay a part of Royce's and Hadrian's lives...

All I needed for Xmas was Royce & Hadrian
I got an early Xmas present when this book came out on Dec 15. Within minutes I was laughing out loud at the interaction of Royce and Hadrian. For those who have read all the other books, there are some interesting revelations. There is more "magic" than in the some of the series, and that's just fine. Tim Gerard Reynolds is the voice of Riyria and I would miss his interpretation of the voices if I read the books in print. Michael J. Sullivan is a wonderful author who wants to keep his readers happy. This audio includes a preview of an upcoming work from a new series.
