About this listen

A massive army on the brink of conquest looms large in a world where prophecies are lies, magic is believed in but never seen, and hope is where you least expect to find it.

Welcome to the Five Isles, where war has come in the name of the invading army of Sor Sevier, a merciless host driven by the prophetic fervor of the Angel Prince, Aeros, toward the last unconquered kingdom of Gul Kana. Yet Gault, one of the elite Knights Archaic of Sor Sevier, is growing disillusioned by the crusade he is at the vanguard of just as it embarks on his Lord Aeros' greatest triumph.

While the eldest son of the fallen king of Gul Kana now reigns in ever increasing paranoid isolationism, his two sisters seek their own paths. Jondralyn, the older sister, renowned for her beauty, only desires to prove her worth as a warrior, while Tala, the younger sister, has uncovered a secret that may not only destroy her family but the entire kingdom. Then there's Hawkwood, the assassin sent to kill Jondralyn who has instead fallen in love with her and trains her in his deadly art. All are led further into dangerous conspiracies within the court. And hidden at the edge of Gul Kana is Nail, the orphan taken by the enigmatic Shawcroft to the remote whaling village of Gallows Haven, a young man who may hold the link to the salvation of the entire Five Isles.

You may think you know this story, but everyone is not who they seem nor do they fit the roles you expect. Durfee has created an epic fantasy full of hope in a world based on lies.

This book is fantastic, and criminally unknown, lots of classic fantasy tropes used to perfection and subverted. Can’t wait to continue

Brian Lee Durfee is a fantastic writer, this series has it all. Great world, believable characters, thrilling plot, can't wait for the third book to come out later this year (2023)

Amazing!

What a fabulous story! I am hooked on the series. The world building, the subtlety of politics, GoT level machinations and betrayals... More. The utterly human descriptions of trauma, sexism and homophobia (and other isms) portrayed as awful as they allways actually are ... the portrayal of the dark side of religion and power abuse... just FANTASTIC.
I just finished the first book and am going for the next one.

AbFab performance as well, incredibly well acted with nuanced delivery that does fine justice to the complexity of the characters and their feelings.

NOT a book for the squeamish, btw, lots of proper gore, Yet, not a gratuitous drop of blood or whiff of burnt flesh to be found; all fully relevant for character dev, world building, plot forwarding and conveying the lives of the well drawn characters.

As with many fantasy and sci fi books, I find myself yearning for some dark skinned characters. The author did SO well in drawing fully rounded female characters across different classes, it was a bit of a letdown. And there is a plethora of the most beautiful women being... predictably... blonde.

I almost forgot to include: there IS some comic relief amidst all the dark. It was so unexpected, SO funny and so welcome that I laughed out loud.

Right. Off to get book 2.

With a darker tone than most fantasy the characters feel so much more relatable as they reflect the spectrum of human frailties. The story is fast paced and engaging. I loved the way religious belief is used to frame and help give context to the actions of the characters. It also stands out as one of the best read books in the genre, the reader is surprisingly engaging and conveys emotion brilliantly. Highly recommend! Certainly one of the top fantasy books I have read in quite some time.

Great read, an engaging grimdark fantasy
