Summary
When Shelley Woodhouse wakes up in hospital from a coma, the first thing she says is that her husband must be arrested.
He’s the reason she’s in here. She knows it. She remembers what he did. Clearly as anything.
But there are things Shelley has forgotten too, including parts of her childhood. And as those start to come back to her, so do other memories. Ones with the power to change everything.
But can she trust these new memories, or what anyone around her is telling her? And who is the mysterious hospital volunteer who brings her food and keeps making her smile? Is it possible to find your future when you're confused about your past?

‘I absolutely adored The Day Shelley Woodhouse Woke Up. I loved the dual timeline, it kept me guessing throughout, and I loved the cast of characters around Shelley – the friends and family who helped her find herself and her lost memories again. It dealt with some sensitive issues with care, and I was completely lost in Shelley’s world, desperate for her to rediscover her truth.’ Clare Swatman, author
‘Intriguing, moving and full of compassion… Will stay with me for a long time to come. In Shelley, Pearson has created a character who represents abused women as so much more than the victims of their abuser. Her strength shines through from the very first page… Part mystery, part emotional drama and entirely engrossing, I highly recommend you read this book.’ Lisa Timoney, author

Touched a raw nerve.
How many Shelley Woodhouse's are out there?
After waking up from a coma, Shelley is amazed to realise that time and tide wait for no man, or in this case, no woman. As she slowly rebuilds her life, Pearson takes us on a journey from the present to the past. The book covers a heavy topic, which affected me deeply. There were many times I considered giving up, but Julie Maisey's narration was so outstanding that I stayed until the end. Unfortunately, it reminded me of a place I have spent thirty years of my life trying to forget.

Another great read (listen!)
I've read and enjoyed all of Laura Pearson's books and this one did not disappoint. In fact I think Laura just gets better! This book and her last one, The last list of Mabel Beaumont, have been my favourites. I got drawn into Shelley's story quickly and loved how cleverly it was woven together. I also thought the narrator gave an excellent performance which always helps with enjoying an audiobook. I listened to this over a couple of days and wish it wasn't over yet!

Heartbreak, memories, love
I absolutely loved this book. I’m a big fan of Laura Pearson’s writing. The love she has for her characters shines through every page and this book is no exception.
Shelley wakes up from a coma and struggles with her memory, trying to process what happened to her and who to believe. Laura Pearson’s storytelling style takes you by the hand through the wards with Shelley as she tries to make sense of her world through utter cognitive exhaustion. You feel her sadness, confusion and the need to trust people - but who can she trust? The reader is made to feel that bewilderment and as Shelley’s brain recovers slowly, the story unfolds to one of absolute joy and love. It made me cry!
The narrator breathes life into Shelley’s story with her pared back performance - an excellent job.
