Summary
"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough
A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.
Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.
The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.
It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?
Critic reviews
“Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they’ll want more.”—Booklist
“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

A very dark twisty story with elements of comedy in it
The twists and turns, it made me laugh out loud and also shout in disbelief, (not great when listening on a bus through headphones)
Very much enjoyed this book, it had me at the first chapter

The twists and turns!!
Just fantastic! John Marrs has done it again, the amount of times I was shouting at my phone or shaking my head…..
The rage I felt in the 1st half, then the disbelief, then the utter astonishment
It’s a story with all the feels!!

Brilliant
Gwen Wright lost her husband just over a year ago and is now suffering from dementia. Her daughter, Connie, a successful wedding planner living in Italy, has moved back to the UK to look after her mum. Well this was a rollercoaster of a ride. John Marrs has, as always, given us a perfectly plotted thriller with lots of little twists and one huge one. This one really was unputdownable for me and I listened way past my usual bedtime.
If a book causes me to have very strong emotions, then I know its a good one. This one certainly did that. Part one made me so, so angry, making me swear out loud (good job I was alone!) but also very sad for Gwen and made for quite difficult listening, and as the book continued my anxiety levels ramped up and up! It perfectly depicts how cruel a disease dementia is, and in his acknowledgements at the end John shares that he wrote the book to highlight how UK law fails to protect people living with dementia. Yes, you do need to suspend disbelief for parts of the book, but it is so entertaining that I can forgive this.
Elizabeth Knowelden, Soneela Nankani and Steve West all did a great job with the narration.

Oh what a tangled web he weaves.
Another multi faceted gem of a story. Happy that most got what they deserved. I personally think it would be better read than listened to as the voices sometimes mismatched for me.

Karmaaaaaaa baby
all the twists....to a point I had whiplash!!!! whaaaaat???!!!!! John Maars is a scarily goooood writer!!!! He keeps his foot on the accelerator and never lets up, while you, dear reader/listener cannot close your eyes....just when you think "I'm a seasoned reader, I can work it out..." he comes out with a swift change of gears you can't help but scream in amazement. I binged this book in a day and half.
I think there was an error in chapTer 69, when Connie went to Meredith's empty house....the narrator said "she looked up at the mirror the only thing Gwen left in the house..." I'm paraphrasing but wasn't it Meredith's house? the only thing of Gwen's in the house was Tom.
I love that John Maars made everyone get exactly what they deserved....it's comforting
