About this listen

For the most part, the dead man received public sympathy. A decent, hardworking chap, with not an enemy anywhere. People were surprised that anybody should want to kill Jim.

But Jim has been drowned in the Dumb River, near Ely, miles from his Yorkshire home. His body has been discovered before the killer intended – disturbed by a torrential flood. It's up to Superintendent Littlejohn of Scotland Yard to trace the mystery of the murder to its source, leaving waves of scandal and sensation in his wake.

I thoroughly enjoy mystery stories of this era. George Bellairs writes some of the better examples. This one is well performed. I hope more of his books are recorded and available on Audible.

The story was initially interesting, but as it developed became inconsistent and unsatisfying. The characters were mostly horrible people, with the few likeable ones quickly dismissed. The narrator mostly read well, but struggled to distinguish characters’ voices, and there were a number of annoying errors (typos, wrong emphasis etc.) which should have been edited. Like a lot of books from this era, contains some language and attitudes that would now be considered offensive.
