Summary
Chief Inspector Macdonald has been invited to a treasure hunt party at the house of the Graham Coombe, the celebrated publisher of Murder by Mesmerism. The clues of the hunt have been devised by Coombe's thriller-writer friends, disguised on the night under literary pseudonyms. The fun comes to an abrupt end, however, when 'Samuel Pepys' is found murdered in the telephone room in bizarre circumstances. Amidst the confusion of too many fake names and convoluted alibis, Macdonald and his allies in the CID must unravel a truly tangled case in this metafictional masterpiece from the beloved Golden Age author.

Delightful writing
Rather more contrived than some Lorac, being in the murder in the country house variety (although not country), but well-conceived, tightly-written and satisfying.

A novel in the form of a puzzle, or vice versa, with the biggest clue in the title.
liked the. strong women. even though they are a little over 'done' at times. Golden age types!

Silly over complicated drivel
Over complicated plot , delivered in a shouty staccato manner by a narrator who has the habit of not being able to pronounce the letter T , so many narrators these days seem to think that it’s fashionable to mispronounce the English language.

Why
For reasons that are unclear to me the narrator has decided to scream talk from the point early in the book where the characters are just calmly talking clues. It's stressful to listen to.

Twisty plot, bad writing, screechy narration
I might have enjoyed the story, inept though the writing proved to be, if it hadn’t been for David Thorpe’s slightly hysterical delivery.
