About this listen

A late-night murder of a diamond merchant’s veteran employee in London’s Hatton Gardens has Scotland Yard calling on Inspector French to investigate. When French gets there he finds not only the victim but missing diamonds and money from an open safe. There are meager clues as the Inspector follows a trail to mainland Europe and back. There are many false clues and several suspects with much of the searching leading to nothing but dead ends. We can listen as French sorts it all out, finding the missing diamonds and nabbing the murderer.

This book has enough twists and turns to keep me listening though I was tempted to stop after the first five minutes as the narrator is probably the last person who should have been chosen for this book. A broad American accent to voice a London Scotland Yard detective and various British and Irish characters is first of all a strange choice, but he has only one voice for all the characters…..and none of the voices are British. In addition, although the reader’s voice would be appropriate for the character of an elderly gentleman, the obvious age of the narrator does not suit these characters at all. It also would have been nice if the various interludes where the narrator hawks and clears his throat, wonders what page he is up to etc, could have been edited out. A very unprofessional recording in all. The fact that I kept on listening to the book despite the multiple negatives of the narrator, is a testament to its interest.

Great story, wrong narrator

The story seems good, and I expect the narrator is a good man with much success but just the wrong person to read this story. I find I cannot listen to it any more.

Wrong narrator

Sadly this excellent English story was spoiled by its narrator whose diction was indistinct and whose narration included an off the cuff comment and a throat clearing that should have been deleted if the editing had been careful. I will avoid this narrator in future

Good story. Dreadful narrator

The story was good but the narrator made it terrible with a very growly voice and totally wrong for an English detective story.

The very poor narrator.
