Summary

A new Cold War threatens the galaxy in this fast-paced and wisecracking thriller of spies and subterfuge.

Simon Kovalic, top intelligence operative for the Commonwealth of Independent Systems, is on the front line of the burgeoning Cold War with the aggressive Illyrican Empire. He barely escapes his latest mission with a broken arm and vital intel that points to the empire cozying up to the Bayern Corporation: a planet-sized bank. There’s no time to waste, but with Kovalic out of action, his undercover team is handed over to his ex-wife, Lt. Commander Natalie Taylor. When Kovalic’s boss is tipped off that the Imperium are ready and waiting, it’s up to the wounded spy to rescue his team and complete the mission before they’re all caught and executed.

I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series.

Enjoyable characters and good story telling.

tedious

The book starts off well, but rapidly devolves into a leisurely soap opera. Given that this is book 1, it seems the author is practicing milking the agenda for several drawn-out volumes; I will pass, thank you.

one way to waste your money

tepid action, wimpy characters, and a do nothing plot combine to make one wish this were a paperback so that it could be used in the outhouse as a wiper of backsides, page by page.

Spycraft in space

I read the first book and really enjoyed it; Mostly because of the characters, but it doesn't hurt that I'm a fan of spycraft and intrigue. This folowup is, I have to say, even better than the first, and it left me wanting more. I'll definitely pick up any future books in this series.

Amazing Voice

The narrator really draws you in and makes the characters come off the page. Lifelike.

What a fun romp!

Moren’s second novel builds and expands upon the first. The plot thickens as compared to his first book, and the hints of a galactic conspiracy at the end leave the reader wanting more.

Meh

not really my cup of tea as it were, I had a hard time paying attention. also narrator does not pitch his voice differently for different characters.

Engaging

A well written espionage story that's punchy and enjoyable from start to finish. There were a couple of performance recaptures that don't sound match well, but otherwise very strong.

Well read and engaging from start to finish

Two things stand out with this book: first, Dan More is really good at writing dialogue. That may be due at least partially to the second thing that stands out, which is Victor Bevine's gorgeous narration. I first heard him read Hyperion - and if you haven't read that one I highly recommend it - and he brings a sort of velvety gravitas to the story and dialogue here.

Beyond the dialogue, the story itself is engaging and well written. It moves along briskly and the characters and relatable and engaging. Each is defined without being pedantic about it and the universe in which they operate has its own set of interesting characteristics.

My only quibble is that there are some places in the book in which I experienced a noticeable shift in the audio, almost as if the narrator re-recorded a sentence with a different mic or in a different space. That's distracting from the immersion and takes a few seconds to adjust to. But the story and the performance are both excellent.
