Her daughter, Carina, is immensely high-powered, with her own fast-paced business in London. Summary
A stunning story of loss, love and the summer that changed everything from the number one best-selling author of Songs of Love and War.
1958. Celestria, the charismatic daughter of an aristocratic family, lives in Pendrift Hall, a pale stone mansion with gardens that tumble down to the Cornish sea. It is summer, and the weeks ahead hold the promise of self-discovery and the thrilling possibility of illicit love affairs.
Yet tragedy erupts in paradise when one of the family vanishes. A mysterious note is left behind with the words: ‘Forgive Me’. Soon Celestria is pulled along a trail of deception, masquerades and mirrors. It will lead her from her idyllic life on the English coast to the orange groves of Southern Italy. It will also lead her to love....

sea of cliches
The story told here is probably quite good. The writing is banal and boring. Tedious detail is piled up as if it might make it interesting. Basically, Rich spoilt kid gets to learn that money cant't buy you love... but ends up rich just the same, with all her insufferable upper class relatives cashing in too. Cornwall, blue sea, rocky. WE KNOW THAT!! Honestly. It's a long long listen so if you're going for quantity you'd be ok...but, immediately after hearing this book I listened to A Room with a View. The contrast in the two writing styles is astonishing. Santa M - trivial, cliches, we are told how she puts hot water in the bath tub, she sniffs some flowers, he twines on about some dull stuff; people are what you would expect of cardboard cut outs, the butler is snobby, the squire has a heart of gold; on the other hand, EM Forster, real, robust dialogue, interesting people who evolve and talk to you, worth spending your mental energy on.

I adore Santa Montefiore but disliked this book.
I have listened to at least 10 of Santa s books and enjoyed each and ever one. Except this one. it took me at least 7 chapters to get into it any which way and I just disliked the main characters so much. it actually never redeemed itself in my opinion.

Dreadful Narration!!!
I am disappointed with this audible book. The characters are ridiculous & outdated. I have to admit I have never liked this author’s writing but I am having to read it for my reading group. The narrator has an awful voice and acting out the parts with those accents is totally unnecessary . I’m returning this audible partly read.

Boring and struggled to hold my attention
Really didn't like this book. I was hoping it would pick up, even at the halfway point, but alas, it did not. I listen to my books whilst running and occasionally I lose concentration on the book and zone out, but with this book, it just didn't matter as when I would zone back in, we were still hearing the description of something completely unnecessary and not complimentary to the story. I also feel this meant the actual storyline was rushed. The love interest happened so rapidly, I almost missed it, it was so quick!
Characters were very hard to like and there were far too many of them. If there were fewer characters, they could have been developed better.
I've read Montefiore before and did enjoy it, but it had similar issues with over describing and excess characters to remember, so think this may be my last unfortunately.
Narrator superb and conveys characters accents well. Would listen to her narrate again.
