Story
Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself. Attracted to this bold young woman are three suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak.

Loved and appreciated by all with whom he works, Harding lives an ordered, regular life in his protected religious environment. Then one day, a young reformer feels he has uncovered a mismanagement of funds and Harding is held to blame. The accusation comes as a shock not only to Harding himself but also to the cathedral community. It then comes to wider notice when the cause is taken up by a national newspaper.

pure Forster charm...
Despite the "faithful" film adaptation scoring at the top of my most watched movies, the book gives so much more of this charming English story.
I decided on the audio version because of the Narrator. Juliet Stevenson scores 10 out of 10 each and every time.

I've listened to this over so many times
I'm not British, but came across the movie so many years ago by accident and enchanted by its beauty. I wanted to go straight to the original book but bit worried that it was too difficult for me, so I turned to audio book as a easier alternative and it was the best thing I've ever done!
Her voice, accent, etc, was so beautiful lovely to listen to.
I always find something new as my understanding of society and history of England of this era.
Now it's permanently there in my iPad and at home, on my travels, etc, when I want to enter this charming Victorian society.
I can't recommend this audio book highly enough.

bought abridged by mistake
The problem with audible is that you can't return things. I kept thinking something was missing in these characters. The abridged versions should be marked as well as the unabriged. Won't make that mistake again.
Anyway, interesting view of life and a good narrator.

Beautifully Written and Read
Juliet Stevenson reads this short, moving novel perfectly, bringing nuanced emotion to all the interesting, multidimensional characters. I read this in college and didn’t appreciate then how forward-thinking and looking Forster was in his view of love relationships and marriage as an equal partnership between a man and a woman. It did not occur to me that Room With A View is a feminist text. But it is in the best humanist sense — showing how a woman could not know her own desires in a society that repressed them but how she could learn to recognize her own sense of self and life when set free to do so. Beautiful and inspiring and full of real truth and compassion, brought to life perfectly by Juliet Stevenson.

Wonderful novel, brilliant reader
It seems as if the one thing everyone in the world can agree upon is that Juliet Stevenson is an absolutely brilliant narrator. No one matches the intelligence of the choices she makes for character voices, line readings, and calm, steady storytelling. She never goes overboard in her delivery. She's supremely tasteful without for an instant being bland.
This is a delightful romantic drawing room comedy of sorts. Forster's insight into his characters puts into the category of "literature" and his characters always surprise. It is a wonderfully entertaining novel on the page, perhaps even more delightful in this audio version.

The best reading
Though it is an abridged version, this is the best reading I have found, and it is very entertaining. Juliet Stevenson gives just a perfect reading. She has the gift of playing the parts of each of the characters and it feels more like she is telling the story rather than merely reading it aloud. I almost dropped one star because it is abridged, but in the end I decided it deserved all 5 stars.
