Summary

The charming and joyful follow-up book from ‘the nation’s taster in chief,’ Felicity Cloake.

If there’s one thing that truly unites this country from Aberdeen to Abernethy, St Ives to St Pancras, it’s an obsession with breakfast. We all have an opinion on the merits of brown sauce versus ketchup on our morning sandwich. No other country’s culinary identity is so bound up with breakfast—the French may love their croissants, the Chinese their congee, but they’re rarely held up as national symbols in the same way as a Full English, an Ulster fry or a bowl of porridge. A good breakfast is our birth right, eaten with as much relish in the Wolsey on Piccadilly as in Terry’s Caff in Borough.

In this eagerly anticipated follow up to One More Croissant for the Road, Felicity Cloake sets off on an epic bike ride round Britain to celebrate and investigate the legendary Great British Breakfast. She rates fry-ups on criteria from the crispness of the bacon to how long they keep her pedalling and stops for fact-based tea-breaks in place of last time’s pause café. And a woman cannot live by All Day Breakfast alone, so as well as recipes for things like Omelette Arnold Bennett or proper porridge, she will report back on the delights of regional specialities she encounters along the way, from Lancashire hotpot to Welsh cakes, Balti to boxty and everything else that takes her fancy en route. All washed down with tea, naturally.

From the less celebrated breakfast items that often cause puzzlement to visitors abroad—baked beans on toast, for example, or Marmite or Weetabix—to the homely foods of different communities, the halwa puris and Polish rye breads, grilled plantain and century eggs, Felicity will take them all in. Her mission is to eat all the best breakfasts of Britain—whether a crumpet hot from the factory production line in Enfield or a desi breakfast in Birmingham or even a pease pudding stottie cake from the original Greggs in Gosforth, this will be a true tour of Britain. And Britain is a country that runs on breakfast.

Britain, breakfast and bikes

Such a lovely light hearted book with great information on food culture history and fun facts. Interesting to know my husband and I are in the minority with our BBQ, Tabasco breakfast sauce combos

Fantastically fabulous

An enjoyable follow up to One More Croissant for the Road. Beautifully written with a captivating story, combining food and travel, capturing the often untold story of our national fascination with breakfast through lighthearted tales mixed with interesting facts. Bravo Felicity.

Delightful

Felicity Cloake’s Red Sauce Brown Sauce is an absolute delight. A two-wheeled odyssey exploring the many breakfasts of the British isles.

Fans of food and/or breakfast and/or travel and/or cycling will love it. Fans of a well told story or Felicity’s writing and warm humour will be enthralled.

Thoroughly recommended. I learnt lots and laughed along the way. Beautifully narrated by the author.

Lovely book: enjoy with caution

This is a really good book - particularly as it comes with PDFs of the recipes. I should say that it has made me ridiculously hungry, and I find myself googling various suppliers of food groups at strange times of the day and night. In the spirit of the book: Red AND Brown.

Should be more enjoyable than it is.

Main problem is that the narrator gabbles through the text. A slower read would have allowed for a pleasing background listen.

A lovely book, makes you full just listening to it

As a Felicity Cloake fan, I had high expectations for this book. She's met them. I now have a greater appreciation for the British breakfast and am even wondering whether I should swap hiking for cycling...

red sauce brown sauce

loved it. four stars because the author read it too quickly for my liking so had to slow down to 0.90 on audible speed. Found this was about right. I do that with a lot of books. maybe I'm a bit slow.

A foody tour of the British Isles

I love Felicity's Guardian Column and devoured One More Croissant for the Road. This is just as good. Felicity makes a good reader of her own work and certainly doesn't grate, but sometimes maybe an actor could bring a bit more colour and life to the narrative.

Yes, it was COVID but this is well below expectations!

I really enjoyed Felicity book on touring France in search of Croissants and was full of great expectations for this one. Unfortunately this is not worth reading or listening to. due to COVID most of the journey was disturbed and half the places closed. So yes, there is a book but in my opinion, it would have been best not to publish this one!

Felicity Gabbles

Highly enjoyable in the written format but unfortunately in this version the narrator, who is also the author, churns through the book at top speed making it almost incomprehensible at times. A shame.
