About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

What would happen if you were cycling to the office and just kept on pedalling?

Needing a change, Mike Carter did just that. Following the Thames to the sea he embarked on an epic 5,000-mile ride around the entire British coastline—the equivalent of London to Calcutta.

He encountered drunken priests, drag queens and gnome sanctuaries. He met fellow travellers and people building for a different type of future. He also found a spirit of unbelievable kindness and generosity that convinced him that Britain is anything but broken. This is the inspiring and very funny tale of the five months Mike spent cycling the byways of the nation.

Absolutely loved it - not my genre usually but at the end I felt I had just travelled around the UK and was as disappointed as the author to have arrived back after 5 months away.

As an older disabled cyclist (I’ve been riding trikes for over 30 years) I’ve really enjoyed Mike’s vivid descriptions of people and places along the route a lot of which wouldn’t be accessible to me so it’s almost as if I’ve been there. But also picking out stretches I can do and some I already have . So thanks you for new ideas. Ps Mike remember some people are on mobility scooters for good reason.( but I know what you mean) Paul N
