Summary

The New York Times best-selling author examines how people can drive creative, moral and organisational progress - and how leaders can encourage originality in their organisations.

How can we originate new ideas, policies and practices without risking it all? Adam Grant shows how to improve the world by championing novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battling conformity and bucking outdated traditions.

Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognize a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, build a coalition of allies, choose the right time to act and manage fear and doubt. Parents will learn how to nurture originality in children, and leaders will discover how to fight groupthink to build cultures that welcome dissent.

Told through dazzling case studies of people going against the grain, you'll encounter an entrepreneur who pitches the reasons not to invest, a woman at Apple who challenged Steve Jobs from three levels below, an analyst who challenged secrecy at the CIA, a billionaire financial wizard who fires employees who don't criticize him and the TV executive who saved Seinfeld from the cutting room floor. Originals will give you groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and how to change the world.

Critic reviews

" Originals is one of the most important and captivating books I have ever read, full of surprising and powerful ideas. It will not only change the way you see the world; it might just change the way you live your life. And it could very well inspire you to change your world." (Sheryl Sandberg, best-selling author of Lean In)

Thought-provoking and implementable

Many of the ideas in this book are why I left the corporate world to work with entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Awesome

I really enjoyed this. Adam covers a lot of bases in this book. I found it really inspiring and challenging. I'll definitely be listening to it again and taking notes this time. I might even buy the ebook version too.

Brilliant

Brilliant book. Full of not just insight and illustrations, but I really appreciated the application of ideas towards the end of the book. So glad I read it.

starting off interesting and then I got bored

There are some useful ideas in this book on how to make original ideas work. However, I found that ways too many ideas rely on examples of events from the suffragette movement.... it felt repetitive and, unless you have a key timelines of the suffragette movement in your mind, eventually names, places, and years would become unnecessary jargons. I kept losing track of the key ideas that this book want to deliver. I tried this book twice already and both time give up mid-way through.

A far cry from inspirational.

In the hope of finding something ORIGINAL, I struggled on to the end of this poor regurgitation of others works, even the attempt to place Sheryl Sandberg (whom I greatly admire as a business woman) on a pedestal as one of the greatest champions for women's suffrage is just a repeat of Lean In. I guess if she tells people often enough there are those who will begin to believe it eventually.

If you are a creative type or a designer or even a programmer of sorts... a very good listen/read.

Brilliant!

Some great stories and some fascinating research woven together in a compelling manner. Great insights for leaders, managers, entrepreneurs and parents and much of it contrary to today's prevailing wisdom

I wanted to like this book...

I really wanted to like this book but it just didn't hold my attention. It's slow and poorly structured and seems to just repeat a lot of what has already been dealt with in other, better times. I'm sorry Adam but it wasn't a good one for me.

Best avoided by Sheep - and the followers of sheep

This book is simply extraordinary. It delivers a continual stream of practical insights that will enormously enhance your understanding of what influences people and particularly what factors lead to the creation of those notable individuals who leave an indelible and unique imprint upon the world. I know that I will be recommending it to scores of peers in the following months.
