Summary

The darkest secrets often hide in plain sight....

When a body is found on a lonely cliff top path, the angelic face of a murdered teenager lies facing the rising sun. Strangled by the hands of an unknown killer, it falls to DI Tom Janssen and his fledgling team to find out how she came to be there.

Destined for a career in medicine, one to rival that of her parents, Holly Bettany’s future was as bright as it had been privileged. Seemingly, all that could threaten this promising teenager’s life was Holly herself.

In an idyllic coastal setting, Janssen must unpick the layers of deceit within a close-knit community that threaten to reveal scandal at every turn. Holly had a secret...and she knew the secrets of others.

Who was prepared to kill in order to keep them hidden? What happens if another comes to know what she did? One thing is certain - a brutal killer has no boundaries....

Set within the mysterious beauty of coastal Norfolk, this fast-paced British detective novel is a dark murder mystery with a little humor and a touch of romance, one that will keep you guessing until the very end when the final shocking twist is revealed.

One Lost Soul is the explosive debut in a new series of thrillers from Amazon number one best-selling crime writer JM Dalgliesh, the author of the Dark Yorkshire books. Perfect for fans of LJ Ross, JD Kirk, Angela Marsons, Joy Ellis, and Damien Boyd.

Great read but...

Bought the Kindle book first and tried the audible after five chapters to hear what it was like.
The reader was too slow and worse couldn't pronounce his RRs which is really annoying!
Otherwise a good read.

Didn't do what it said on the tin!

The story really didn't live up to the expectations I had from reading the description of the novel . It failed to create an interesting background to the murder at all. I'd class it as light listening . I lost my place a few times ( fell asleep listening at bedtime ) and barely noticed what I'd missed as it didn't make a difference. The characters were not well developed and were hard to relate to. The plot was dull with a dénouement that was contrived . Anyone could have been the murderer .
The narrator's voice was irritating at times .
Damned by faint praise ..sorry but I don't think I will download any more from this author .

One Lost Soul

This was a really hopeless story. one knew right from the start who had done it. This made the police look really useless. They totally ignored the obviously very dysfunctional family. In real life the police would have interviewed the family rigorously.

so it was totally boring waiting for the police to work out who had killed the girl. A really rotten non plot. Two other huge mistakes. The police realise the phone the friend of the dead girl has a tracker on it. However they still go to the wrong place. The dead girl was pregnant. They would have identified the DNA of the foetus and known immediately it was a relative. So all in all the police are totally useless which is absurd. The non plot was padded out with nonsense.

Enjoyed the story not so the story telling.

Good, engrossing story.
However, the narrator's accent I found very difficult to listen to and his attempt at a Scottish accent was absolutely appalling. It was only my curiosity about the story kept me listening. I would have given five stars had the narrator's accent not grated quite so badly.

Common

Very common elements, though not entirely uninteresting. The narration is off-putting. The narrator’s inflections sound offhand, as though he’s not really very interested.

Good start

This author was recommended to me but I was reticent to try this based on some reviews. Once I started it I put it aside for several months before I started it again. I’m glad I did.

I listened to the audiobook so, apparently, I missed seeing the typos and grammatical errors that others commented upon. I didn’t notice any of those issues.

The synopsis is available elsewhere. I had a hard time getting into the book but eventually it came together for me. I didn’t have any attachment to the characters at the beginning but they became more interesting as the story unfolded. There are several potential killers but I never guessed who the guilty party was. I see a new DCI around in the next book. I hope.

The narration was well done. I am looking forward to starting the next book in the series.

Justice

Excellent book. Narrator fantastic. I was disappointed when to finish the plot, you need to read book two; however if the book is as good as this one, I don't mind.

Well written. Good story

The characters and events of the story are woven nicely without any loose threads.

Excruciating, elaborate and laborious detail

I wanted to like this book. I tried. I found myself wishing it was over by chapter four. The amount of minute detail of every thought, facial change and detail of the surrounding area made me wish for one direct thought. The author changes between points of view for the same scene without warning. I had to go back several times just to remember what character was speaking. I only finished the book because I spent a credit on it and I refuse to give up before I have heard a complete story. The ending was as unexpected as it was believable. I just wanted this story to be done with. I will not be listening to this author again. The story could have been told in 2 hours instead of 8+. If that would have been the case then I might have submitted a positive review. The plot and characters were believable and somewhat predictable, that is until the last 2 chapters. If you enjoy long unnecessary descriptions that add no content then this book is for you.

At first I wasn't sure

For the first 30 minutes or so, I found it hard to follow the story. After getting going the book turned out to be a good listen. Definitely worth buying the second book.

Nothing special here, predictable, cliche plot. I do not intend to continue with the series.

Excellent!

I truly enjoy Dalgleish's mysteries. the characters are well developed, the story holds my interest (a real page-turner), and Patmore's reading is excellent. Now, on to the next book in the series!
