Story
Set against the colourful boho backdrop of London's Camden in the 1990s, Craig Revel Horwood's first novel, Dances and Dreams on Diamond Street, tells the story of an unlikely family of friends who each rent a room in a ramshackle six-bedroom, four-storey townhouse. Like any family, the residents of Diamond Street sometimes fight and often act up, but when the chips are down, they're there for each other in an instant - usually brandishing a cheap bottle of booze and the offer of an impromptu kitchen disco.

Adam Gabriel has always been a child of nature. Raised on his parents' remote Yorkshire farm, where life is measured by the rhythms of the flock, the turn of the seasons and the yearly arrival of an itinerant local monk, he seems destined for a quietly contented life. As Adam grows, Luke and Bethany see flickers of something extraordinary in their son - a healing touch that goes beyond his love for the land. But Adam's gentleness has always made him an outsider, and a powerful gift can also be a heavy burden.

One Enchanted Book
Loved, loved, loved this book. The key characters were vulnerable and engaging. The atmosphere of the ballroom, the opulent hotel and the threats of impending troubles in Europe are threaded through the story and pull you in from the start of the book. The narration was just right. Just didn’t want the story to end. I hope this isn’t the last we will hear of the Raymond, the dancers and staff at the Buckingham. More please Mr Du Beke 😊

Decent with off putting narration
I wasn’t expecting too much and thought it would be all about dance, but there was a decent bit of plot in there and very evocative of 1930s. Narration was good, but really off-putting in a lot of places as you could hear the narrator swallow loudly. Completely distracted me from the story at times.

Surprisingly Enjoyable
This book is completely different to ones I usually listen to. At first I didn’t think I would get much further than the first few chapters but I stuck to it and I’m pleased I did. As the characters and the story developed I found myself getting engrossed and I really enjoyed it. Great effort for a debut book.

Upstairs, Downstairs with demo dancing thrown in
This book was not what I expected, but I enjoyed the story and the characters. Unfortunately, Julian Ovenden's diction with ever increasing swallowing and irritating mouth sounds did spoil it a little. I am sure Anton Du Beke has another title in him and I look forward to it.
