About this listen

One grey dismal day, Janine Marsh was on a trip to northern France to pick up some cheap wine. She returned to England a few hours later having put in an offer on a rundown old barn in the rural Seven Valleys area of Pas de Calais. This was not something she'd expected or planned for.

Janine eventually gave up her job in London to move with her husband to live the good life in France. Or so she hoped. While getting to grips with the locals and la vie Française, and renovating her dilapidated new house, a building lacking the comforts of mains drainage, heating, or proper rooms, and with little money and less of a clue, she started to realize there was lot more to her new home than she could ever have imagined.

Ten years ago, Janine Marsh decided to leave her corporate life behind to fix up a run-down barn in northern France. This is the true story of her rollercoaster ride, in many ways a love story, with her sharp observations on the very different way of life, culture, and etiquette of France.

From her early struggles and homesickness through personal tragedy, to her attempts to become self-sufficient and to breed "the fattest chickens in the village", Janine learned that there was more to her new home than she could ever have imagined.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. A fascinating true story of how the author ended up moving to northern France with her husband on a whim, and then the challenges they faced (and overcome). It’s a story of endurance, determination and commitment to make a success in life. I learned a lot about French traditions, culture and a lot of bizarre stuff (to us Brits anyway)! Packed with humorous content, it’s a great listen and I highly recommend it.

A great insight into French life in rural France 🇫🇷

Whereas I had doubts about reading yet another story of an immigrant from the UK moving to rural France, it was offered free on Audible so I thought I would give it a go..

I couldn’t turn it off! During one of this year’s heatwaves I decided to retreat to a shady part of my (French) garden, put in the earplugs and some 6 hours later finished the book. The writer is witty, observant and retells her experiences of her first love, then hate then love again of France. As an immigrée myself of 25 years I too experienced these highs and lows of living in this wonderful country. She captures the idiosyncrasies of life and the lives of the neighbours so well. My only criticism would be the fake French accent used by the reader when quoting a French person.

I have discovered the more recent podcasts. Look forward to hearing these.

This is a delightful listen often funny and at times emotional. My wife and I love France and dream of having a second home there eventually. Whether this is a goal of yours or if you simply love France and country living, you must listen!

Loved it!!

The good life moving from England to France on a whim. And how they fitted into French life so easily. Sounds idyllic to me. Would recommend.

Loved this lighthearted romp through the expat experience in France Lovely stories of her parents also. The narrator was excellent I eagerly downloaded the sequel Four Seasons in France but the narrator is so poor I just can't listen to it

Decent book, although I suspect there are better books on the subject. It's about a woman who moves to a rural, run down place in France. I liked hearing about the locals and their interactions. I particularly enjoyed the humorous list at the end of things to be aware of if/when moving to France and what not to do/say!

3.7 stars. Lighthearted and quite enjoyable.

Lovely story, you don't have to want to live in France or live there already, it's just a nice tale of a journey. Really enjoyed hearing how such a townie can be captured by the animal rescue bug and thumbs up for the way they both embraced this, great stories I can totally relate to!

If you are looking for a more in depth 'how to move to France and survive the bureaucracy' type of book, this isn't it. In fact the 'Allo 'Allo type narration is a little bit cringe worthy in places, I think i'd have preferred the author to actually narrate this herself but c'est la vie (see what I did there).

All in all, a lovely book, some sad parts with the loss of family members but on the whole, a lovely read, thank you.
