A huge turning point for both Paul and his son Rudy as they are finally reunited. Both characters are given major character growth in this volume and have major reality checks that make them both feel inadequate and like they have failed each other and their family. Rudy learning that he and Eris weren’t the only people to get displaced, and it was in fact a whole nation, that his family aren’t safe, and that Paul has become an underweight, tired, alcoholic shell of his former self was a lot to handle and a gripping read. Seeing him solo Paul's entire party with a comical ‘mask’ only for Paul to break it and realise this mage was his son was honestly the most Paul and Rudy style reunion you could have imagined; it felt true to their characters for them to meet again this way. Eris and Ruijerd’s care and defensiveness over Rudy were also heartwarming. It was also quite heartbreaking to see that he had to depart for his journey on bad terms with his little sister, even if both he and Paul did get to reconcile and experience pivotal growth as people in this volume. The extra chapter about Ariel and the border guards was also surprisingly good.
