About this listen

Father and Son Brave The Labyrinth!

Rudeus and Paul must descend into the deadly depths of a Teleportation Labyrinth to rescue Zenith. The father-son duo makes short work of deadly beasts and ancient magical traps, but it's the terrible truth at the Labyrinth's heart that proves the greatest threat of all. A heart and gut-wrenching volume with twists and turns that will make you feel the full emotional spectrum from start to finish. The best written action so far, the Manatide Hydra fight felt real and as if I was there and had my heart pounding. The strategy, tactics and teamwork used in this fight were great; it felt like you could imagine it all in real-time.

But the character relationships are what struck hardest in this volume. The father-son relationship hit very hard, and it was beautiful seeing how happy Paul was to see Rudy all grown up, and how much he really cared about him. This made his sudden death even more impactful and heartbreaking to read.

The Roxy chapter, as well as everything involving her and Rudeus, was an emotional experience. Hearing that those 2 years she spent living with Rudy and his family were the happiest of her life, and that his parents felt like her real parents to her, and her confessing to him was powerful. Elinalise’s support throughout this entire volume was great, and she has certainly grown into a character I cannot imagine the story without.

Once returning to the city where his wife and kid are waiting for him, we see Rudy start to run, in total fear that they may not be there when they get back, and his utter panic and distress here once again shows how well stuff like anxiety is written in this series.

The small touches, like Rudy being given the money/rewards Paul would have earned, as well as the earnings of some of the other party members, as they felt useless compared to him, were heavy, but nothing in comparison to Norn's reaction to the news. The complete breakdown of Norn was very well done, and even more heavy-hitting when you take into account the previous volumes' contents. The declaration of making Roxy his second wife also led to even more character drama regarding Norn, who turned extremely hostile during this moment.

But Sylphie’s acceptance and love saved the day, acknowledging that she could tell immediately how strong Roxy’s love was, and that she was relieved she was like her, another normal girl in love. Leading to some strong family bonding and Norn having to realise how much what she said would have also hurt Aisha and Lilia.

And at the end, we see Rudy talking to the grave of his dad, telling him about his family, and most importantly, truly acknowledging him as his real father. We are also given some really powerful scenes throughout of Rudy realising all the regrets he has from his past life and just how much his parents genuinely cared about him, and the overwhelming guilt from not attending their funerals. Overall, an absolutely incredible, emotional and wild ride.

For me this was my favorite of the series. it felt like so many things got wrapped up in a nice bow, and I had tears in my eyes for a majority of the second half.

Best book in the series so far.

Everything you like about this story packed into one volume. Great performance, do find the voices a little odd because I am used to Japanese voice actors in the anime but it doesn’t take away from a great performance and story

Best volume so far
