simply goated instalment of the best series ever. The fight, the Slice of life, all parts of this book is perfection

Best book of the series

Kirk manages to keep all characters distinct in their mannerisms and tone to the point where it is never unclear who speaks, despite a very broad roster of very different characters. Otherwise, one of the most gripping volumes in the series for me

One-man character army

Everything was perfect, from the perpetrations of the battle to Rudeus marrying his best wife. Perfection

It was perfect.

I think I cried or at least teared up five times during this volume, and according to my watch, my heart rate also increased dramatically during some chapters. One of my favourite books of all time, period.

The first 2 chapters of the Diary from the future Rudeus from the dark timeline were extremely graphic, horrifying and heartbreaking to read. This volume really starts to solidify just how terrifying the Mangod really is. I genuinely haven’t been this scared of a series antagonist since I was a child, when I would read comic books or watch superhero cartoons with villains who would give me nightmares. The lengths and manipulation tactics this character uses are supervillain-level evil, and it will only be expanded upon further in later volumes. Rudy’s visceral reaction to the horrifying read, and the heartbreak at the knowledge that his whole family is at risk turns into his resolve to go into a battle to the death against the strongest being on the planet. On the orders of the Mangod, he goes to fight Orsted.

He builds a Gundam Mecha suit, creates new magic and lays traps and goes in with full battle strategies. But beforehand, he has to say heartbreaking goodbyes to his loved ones, and it is honestly really painful to read, because he is fully expecting to die, and he doesn’t even know if he wins, that his family will be safe; he is doing this all just for the chance that they can be protected.

The fight itself was even better than the Manatide Hydra and was honestly one of the best-written fights I’ve ever read. My heart was literally pounding, and I was stressed and even got goosebumps at times as it went on. You could feel the pure emotion behind everything, and the fear, the helplessness, the stress. And you are rooting for him to win. About to be killed, Eris finally shows up to reunite with Rudy, and she brought the whole family with her. The utter shock of his other wives, that he really was planning to die and that he had lied to them about just how powerful Orsted really was, was painful to hear. Roxy even showed up pregnant, because she would rather die by Rudy’s side than let him die alone for her, and Sylphie gave Rudy a massive talking to when it was all over. But it was that family bond and love, as well as Rudeus being the strongest foe Orsted has perhaps ever faced since the great war, that piqued his curiosity. And in the end, after seeing his resolve and love, he promises he can keep them safe from the Mangod, and they from an alliance to take him down together.

We have been waiting since the end of Volume 6 for this, to see Eris and Rudy fight Orsted again, and the wait was worth it. Both characters have grown an insane amount, fuelled by the trauma, and in Eris’s case, fuelled by her love for Rudy. As with tradition with his wives, they save him at a moment where he is alone and at the worst of his life, and they become his ray of hope, and he falls for them all over again, and it was Eris’s turn this time. Like Rudeus, all my upset with her for leaving him washed away when we learnt just how hard she had been working this whole time and how strong her love for him is. And while I still think Sylphie is my favourite, I definitely love Eris as a character and a love interest, and the wait to see them together made it even more emotional and special.

The worldbuilding and lore we get with Rudy and Orsted is incredibly interesting, and it really is in true Rudeus Greyrat fashion that he is there, in his cabin, that the Dragon God is staying in, having a normal discussion with him. It humanises the dragonfolk and makes you understand more how painful the curse has been for Orsted, given that Rudeus is only the second ever human to be able to see him as a normal person. We also learn just how powerful Rudy is and how much mana Orsted was forced to deplete in that insane spectacle of a showdown.

At the end of this volume, he can sleep soundly again, with his now even larger and more loving family, even closer than ever, and with a new purpose and goal to strive for. Not alone but surrounded by people who love and respect him. I cried, I smiled, I laughed, and I panicked. This entire volume was absolute cinema, a genuine masterpiece. The best fantasy book I have ever read since The Lord of the Rings.

An absolute masterclass in fantasy writing, insane
